“Am I the first person you’ve ever banged in your plane?”

After taking turns going back to the bathroom to clean up—the other two were asleep and didn’t notice anything—I’d plopped myself down on his lap in the pilot’s chair. In addition to being as close to cuddling as we could get in the cockpit, it gave me a higher seat to look out the window and appreciate the view.

He rumbled with silent laughter. “I won’t lie. No, you’re not the first.”

“Damn,” I said.

“But that was the first time I’ve done it in the cockpit. Usually I try to avoid any activity that might lead to a bunch of buttons accidentally getting pushed.”

“And you made an exception for me?”

He patted my thigh. “The danger is what made it so much fun.”

I thought about that. Bending over in the cockpit and being fucked from behind, while gazing out the window at the world far below us, was interesting to say the least. I wondered how many people had experienced that kind of sex.

“I meant what I said,” Roman whispered.

I twisted to look back at Roman. “You weren’t just pouring your heart out to get in my pants again?”

“Oh, I was definitely doing that,” he said with a roguish grin. “But it was the truth, too.”

Fuck the Diadem. I’ve been chasing you. It seemed like a ridiculous thing for a treasure hunter to claim. Like a football player saying, “Fuck playing in the Superbowl, I’d rather go watch a movie.”

But Roman seemed genuine. And that scared me for a whole bunch of reasons.

“I’m not good with relationships,” I admitted. “Too much traveling. You know as well as I do. The hunt is like jumping from one drug to another. Finding a priceless artifact, basking in the victory of it, and then chasing the next high.”

“I’ve always been a loner myself,” he said. His voice was deep, and thick with the satisfaction that came after sex. Completely comfortable underneath me. “Since leaving the SEALs, anyways. But two archaeologists working together…”

There was that suggestion again. Not just regarding this treasure, but with a hint of future partnership. For the past few days, every time he brought it up I’d dismissed it outright. But now, I let the idea pierce my bubble and roll around in my mind.

It was appealing.

We want different things, the voice in my head whispered. Roman was after monetary reward. Fame and fortune. Whereas I wanted…

I didn’t even know what I wanted. The Khan Diadem had consumed my life for so long that I didn’t know what I would do if I ever found it.

And if I didn’t know what I wanted for myself, how could I tell Roman?

“We’ll see what happens,” I said. I waited for Roman to challenge my noncommittal answer, but he only grunted underneath me.

“Indeed we will. And who knows? Maybe we’ll fall in a radioactive lake outside Chernobyl, and then none of this will matter.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t tell Wade. He’ll be avoiding every puddle we come across in the exclusion zone.
