CHAPTER 26

“Oh, my goodness, Vanessa! You’ve just had the most rotten fuckin’ luck when it comes to John! This just sounds unbelievable!” Ava said, while she paced back and forth in her bedroom as I sat on her bed.

“Well, just remember, I’m the one who was involved in the secret relationship with John and then broke it off with him to stay in one with Brad, and then became Brad’s girlfriend when him and Lisa finally broke up. John has really had it in for me since — you know that. I just couldn’t believe it when I was trying to get out of Meadow’s house through the patio door and turned around and looked him dead in his cold, evil eyes — and we both know that he’s very cold and evil.”

“Yeah, we do — too bad Meadow doesn’t know.”

“I know — but she’s gonna find out eventually,” I said, as I shook my head.

“I can’t believe he made her have sex with you! I know you felt so awkward and embarrassed!”

“That’s an understatement. I was also very scared — Meadow didn’t know how much, but I know that John did. I did everything he said to do because I didn’t want him to hurt me or her because it’s obvious that he doesn’t care who he hurts, and unfortunately, Meadow may end up seeing that if she stays with him and we don’t need anyone else to be hurt or killed by him. Just by what she’d told me, I honestly think it was him who tried to kill Marie today. He knew about the text that Marie had sent Meadow before she told him about it — it was him, Ava! It was him!”

“I believe a hundred percent that it was him, too. I put nothing past that fucker. We need to get his DNA because I just don’t want something to end up happening to all of us at his hands before we get it because that’s what he’s counting on — for us all to be dead like Natalie or seriously injured like Marie, and he’ll walk free and no one will ever know that he did what he did to Natalie. We can’t have that — not at all.”

“Exactly, Ava. He’s not gonna kill or hurt any more of us. I hope Marie makes a miraculous fast recovery so she can tell us that it was him who did it. I know that he just knew that he’d killed her — I know he took all of his rage out on her for shooting him that day out in the woods. When she sent Meadow those texts, it was just bad fuckin’ timing! I mean, she could’ve sent them to her when she wasn’t there or after she left his house.”

“Oh, and you know it, Vanessa!”

I let out a deep sigh. “Ava.”

“Yes?” she asked, as she sat on her bed next to me.

“Do you think I should tell Brad about this?”

She sighed, and then held my hand.
