Camden

The quiet of the empty house stretched around me. Breeze’s footsteps had disappeared into the dark, but I hadn’t pursued her.

Not yet.

Holding myself together while she’d kissed me had taken everything I had. An internal battle raged.

Images flashed through my mind, things I wanted to do to Breeze. It built on how I was angry at her for the choices she’d made, but also fucking delighted that she’d come to me. I was out of control and spiralling.

I’d paid for her at an auction, for fuck’s sake.

In McInver’s house, it was all too present how much I was like him.

I breathed through my nose, my hands clenched into fists. Then in my head, Struan’s advice returned. He told me to talk to her. To ask.

Something had to give or I’d explode.

Breaking the tight hold on myself, I strode down the corridor, following her flight. At the wide-open entrance foyer, I paused.

A clunk came from up the stairs.

In a patch of light from a high-up window, Breeze sat near the top of the marble steps. She took a swig from the antique bottle of champagne then brought her attention to me.

The moonlight silvered her curls. I’d seen her like this before, the night of the fire when I’d brought her back to the cabin. Then, she’d been terrified. Now, she was a fucking goddess.

“Why did ye walk away?” I asked.

I suspected an answer but needed to hear it from her.

“I’m not yours.”

“Never said ye were.”

“What I mean is, you don’t own me. I’m guessing that being the heir somehow enabled you to access McInver’s money to pay for me at the auction.” She took another deep swig of the wine. “That contract is over.”

I moved to the base of the stairs then climbed a couple of steps.

“I know that was on your mind,” she continued. “I felt it in the way you kissed me. You were holding back.”

“True,” I confirmed.

“But there’s more to it. You judge me. Which is fucking offensive.” Breeze watched my every move, my slow prowl up the stairs. “I know you hate what I did, or what I was prepared to do, but I would sell myself a thousand times over for those I love. I’d endure anything. Women are strong in that respect. It’s men who put the price on things like virginity and ownership.”

“I don’t judge ye for that, but I won’t lie and say I approve. It makes me so angry to think of ye in danger.” I advanced until I was just a couple of steps below her.

Every inch I got closer to her, the need within me grew.

Heated my blood.

Left me harder than ever.

“So much you branded your name on me for any man to see and take as a warning.”

At least in that, I was innocent. “No.”

“What do you mean, no? That’s exactly what you did.”

“Ye want a proper apology for the tattoo. You’re right. I’m sorry. But tell me which way I wrote the letters. From whose perspective do they read?”

She glanced down at her body.
