CHAPTER 20

MILANA

I returned from the early morning market to see the outer door to my apartment had been replaced. It was a huge step up from the decrepit wooden door that had looked like it had been pieced together from the wreckage of a Roman ship. In fact, it was almost a little too much. This was Cavalieri, not Naples or Sicily, after all. I hardly thought a steel door with a deadbolt was needed. Half the people in this village barely even bothered to lock their doors at night.

Making a mental note to check in with Sal for the new key, I made my way up the narrow stairs, when I encountered a man kneeling in front of my door. My open door.

"What the hell are you doing?"

He rose and turned.

My mouth dropped open when I saw the handsome face of Cesare Cavalieri. "Hello, Milana."

My eyes narrowed. "Get out of here. Now."

His hard gaze traveled slowly over me as he inhaled through his nose, appearing to be trying to cool his temper. "Not until I've finished."

I stormed past him into my apartment. Dropping my linen grocery bag on the narrow kitchen counter, I returned, propping my hands on my hips. "Why are you here?"

He leaned his shoulder against the doorjamb. I hated how at ease he looked when I was seething inside. "My father said the door needed to be repaired. He was going to send one of the boys, but I..." Again his dark gaze looked me over, lingering on my lips. "Volunteered."

I crossed my arms over my chest as I tilted my head. "Only the outer door was broken. Why are you working on my door? And how did you even get it open without the key?"

He gave me a charming, crooked smile. "What can I say? I have skills, " he said suggestively. "I like what you've done with your hair. It looks cute all short and bouncy like that."

I touched the natural spiral curls of my bobbed, just above shoulder-length hair. I'd cut my long hair a few years ago after leaving school. I loved the chic, fashionable style. Although knowing he liked it made me want to grow it long again just out of spite.

"I want you to leave."

"I'm not finished."

"I don't care. Leave."

He stepped inside. "No."

My heart raced as I backed up. "I don't care what you're doing to my door. I need you to leave. Now."

"Your door had a shitty lock on it. It wasn't safe. I'm not leaving until I finish replacing it with something better. And after that we are going to talk about your so-called living arrangements. This place is not acceptable, Milana. It's too small and not secure." He gave my apartment a scathing once-over. "You should have told me this is where you were living. I'm going to move you into one of the Cavalieri properties first thing tomorrow."

I ticked off the items on the tips of my fingers. "First, I liked my shitty lock just the way it was.
