Chapter Eight

“We all know that the opinion of clients and customers can make or break a company—even one as lucrative and popular as Silverstone. One bad review is too much in this kind of industry, especially considering our mandate of delivering a ‘flawless experience’.”

Alexis paced the boardroom as she talked. Every meeting started like this. She had to constantly kill fires and feed her team with the most basic of PR principles. It was starting to chip away at her patience. The first two weeks on the job had been harrowing. Her department was divided. One half was elated that someone from the outside had been appointed and the other sided with the disgruntled PR manager who had been coveting the promotion. Alexis had slowly been tipping the scales in her favor with her gentle, yet direct approach.

She turned to face the group of people watching her. It was a mixed group—the PR manager, the communications manager, the marketing manager and the customer services manager.

“I’d like an explanation why the social media strategy we discussed and agreed upon two weeks ago has still not been implemented.”

She waited and had to suppress the desire to tap her foot when no one responded.

“Bill, you and Louisa were responsible for it. I want an explanation.”

Bill Reece was tall and lanky, had a sharp mind and had been supportive from day one. At the moment he seemed confused and ripped Louisa Gray apart with a sharp glare.

“Louisa intimated that you had changed your mind and that we should wait until just before the New Year,” he finally grated through clenched teeth.

Louisa shifted around uncomfortably, clearly annoyed that Bill had ratted her out. She looked at Alexis with defiance.

“It makes more sense. Why go through all the trouble to set up promos that we’ll only have to change with the strategy you intend to implement for the New Year’s,” she censured Alexis.

“How long have you been with Silverstone, Louisa?” Alexis parried, well aware that it had been four years, but it was time that Louisa faced the reason why she had been overlooked for two promotions in that time.

“You should know. You studied all our files,” she snapped, ignoring the gasps from her colleagues at her blatantly insubordinate behavior.

“Yes, I did, which is why your response concerns me. In the four years you’ve been here, has there been one year where detailed strategies haven’t been implemented?”

“No.”

“And in those four years, were you allocated specific duties to perform in line with those strategies?”

“Yes.”

“Explain to me, Louisa, the outline of the current year’s strategy regarding social media,” Alexis demanded with an icy stare. The message was clear. Louisa Gray was treading on thin ice.

She stubbornly refused to talk and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Then let me enlighten you of the first strategy you failed to comply with. We were supposed to collaborate with award-winning director Jonas Keanz, to produce a series of twenty-second stop motion stories that highlight our fantastic resort and what drives our brand’s personality, with the specific aim to create a buzz.
