BECKETT
I couldnât stop thinking about everything Hayes had told me last night. He hunted people and hurt them, and while that shouldâve terrified me away from him, I was intrigued more than anything. I wanted to know more about it, and I wanted him to teach me. Iâd never touched a gun in my life because Dad never believed in having them in the house, but the thought of target shooting with Hayes was stuck firmly in my mind.
âBeck. Beck! Beckett! Hello, Beckett Andrew Snyder, are you in there?â
I blinked, dragging myself from my thoughts, and focused on my sister across the other side of the breakfast table. She smirked and flipped her newly dyed red hair, and I rolled my eyes.
âWhat are you thinking about? Or who?â She waggled her eyebrows at me, and when I was sure Mom was distracted in the kitchen, I gave her the middle finger. She mirrored me, but Mom turned in time to see her, while Iâd managed to drop my hand quickly.
âBriella, not at the breakfast table and not while we have visitors.â She pointedly sent a look over my shoulder, and I tilted my head to see Hayes walk into the dining room. He was delicious, and I didnât even care that he was in clothes from last night. His hair was mussed, and he hadnât had a shower this morning, so it was a combination of bedhead and me running my hands through it when weâd first woken. Iâd learned that Hayes wasnât a fan of early mornings, and I considered how similar we were in that regard. Dad had told me Hayes didnât sleep in, but I was guessing Dad thought Hayes was an early riser because heâd actually caught him sneaking into the house at the asscrack of dawn a lot when they were younger. It had taken Mom continuously yelling to come get breakfast and the threat of her forcing the lock to get us moving. We didnât want her to catch us cuddling.
He winked the moment Mom turned her back, and I gave him a smug smile when he pulled out the seat beside me and sat down. I slid my hand under the table and laid it on his thigh, squeezing.
âWhat are your plans today, Beck and Hayes?â Mom asked as she set out four plates on the counter. âNormally Henry doesnât work on Sundays, but he had to go meet a lady at the office because someone drove a car into her house last night. Can you believe it? He says he thinks heâll be there most of the day because his company also insured the driver.â
âWow,â Hayes said, but he couldnât have sounded less interested.
âYou didnât ask me what Iâm doing.â Briella pouted, and I stuck my tongue out at her, which made Hayes snort.
âBecause you already said you were working, then going to Ariellaâs house,â Mom said, glaring over her shoulder. âDonât act like I donât consider you, young lady.â
âIâm actually taking Beck out to a shooting range.
