VENGEFUL SPIRIT

Kaskin was alone in the library. A dusty book was open on a nearby table. A spider was crawling on it. The title of the page caught his interest. In the lower right hand corner of the page, there was a picture of a necklace. The necklace had a diamond pendant, with two silver dragons spiraling around each other and the diamond.

THE NECKLACE OF EIÉONER

Eiéoner was the strongest of all dragons. He gave a diamond necklace to Meithoko after he defeated Verteq. The necklace had special powers. One of its two silver dragon pendants gives the bearer and his loved ones long life, unless they die in battle. The other dragon gives great health to the bearer and loved ones.

The necklace was said to have vanished after Meithoko was murdered, which caused all of his loved ones to die. This theory was proven to be incorrect. Chikara was seen with a newborn baby after the necklace “vanished.” People assumed that she was powerful, so she somehow avoided the...

The rest of the words were faded and could not be read. Kaskin tried to make them out, but it was futile. He thought, So Satreih’s mother was a friend of Meithoko’s.

All of the candles that were in the library suddenly went out, and the book shut on its own. Kaskin felt that there was somebody breathing downhis neck. He turned around, but nobody was there.

* * * *

Satreih and Yia were walking around. They noticed that everyone had fear in their eyes. A thick fog was covering the ground and wouldn’t go away. A Meikosan warrior approached.

Satreih asked him as he approached, “What’s going on? Why is everyone so tense?”

The warrior walked past Satreih and didn’t stop. He whispered, “I don’t know. People are claiming that there is a spirit. I don’t believe in such things, but still—” He disappeared around a corner.

Satreih looked at Yia. “Is there a spirit?”

“Yes. I can feel its vibrations.”

“Okay. I can fight it.”

Yia laughed softly. “Do you know anything about fighting spirits?”

“No. But my mother is a spirit, and she was the one who let us out of the prison in Rasiamoramisa.”

“Let me rephrase that. Do you know anything about fighting vengeful spirits? Besides, your mother is on your side, so she doesn’t count.”

“Uhh.no. Is there a difference between fighting regular spirits and fighting vengeful ones?”

“Oh yeah. Fighting vengeful spirits is a lot more dangerous, especially if you don’t know how to fight them. Let me handle this one.”

Satreih asked, “How do you know that this is a vengeful spirit?”

“The fog. There are spirits everywhere. The fog only rises when there’s a vengeful spirit around. Also, its vibrations are more evil.”

“What happens if the vengeful spirit defeats you?”

“Your soul goes to Hell automatically, even if you’ve been good all of your life.”

“Oh-kaaay. That’s kind of creepy.” Satreih edged a little closer to Yia.

“Creepy is one of the things that you’ll have to worry about the least. Let me handle this one.”

“Right, right. But what if it defeats you?”

Yia said confidently, “It won’t.
