Chapter 25

Two buses, a trolley car, and a water taxi. Kristi wasn’t sure she would have managed to navigate her way to her hotel had Kade not called and walked her through it. Every time she reached a transfer point, he texted her a new set of directions, giving her the exact place she needed to be for the next leg of her journey. At least someone cared about her safety.

She stepped off the water taxi, the last of the sun’s rays bouncing off the harbor. Under normal circumstances, she would have stopped and enjoyed the simple beauty of the light shimmering off the water, but at the moment all she wanted was to lock herself in a room and pretend today had never happened. She walked the two blocks to her hotel, glancing over her shoulder to make sure she wasn’t being followed. In truth, she doubted she would notice even if she were. That didn’t stop her from going past her intended destination, entering the hotel next door, passing through to the back exit, and then making her way to the back door of her hotel.

She couldn’t function enough to figure out directions, but apparently, her intelligence protocols had been drummed in so well that they continued to be instinctive.

The electronic key Ace had sent her unlocked the back door, and she quickly slipped inside. She debated briefly whether she should use the stairs or the elevator.

As though reading her mind, Kade texted her. Take the stairs.

Kristi imagined any number of predators waiting for her in the stairwell. She put her hand on the door handle, drew a deep breath, and forced herself to go inside. As soon as she ensured that she was alone, she sprinted up the two flights.

Winded, she made her way to her room. The moment she entered, she flipped the bolt and then continued past the king-size bed to the single armchair angled by the wide window.

She dropped into the chair and clutched the throw pillow to her chest. Tears welled up, and she let them come. A ragged breath caught in her chest before escaping on a sob.

Memories of those tense moments in the bank flooded her mind as tears streamed down her cheeks.

She managed to push aside the image of guns pointing at her, but Ace’s reaction when he’d sent her away caused a dead weight to form in her stomach. Was he so disconnected from her that he didn’t know what she needed? A simple hug would have gone such a long way, but he had been all business, too busy to give her any real gesture of comfort.

She didn’t know how long she let her emotions pour out, but by the time she wiped away the lingering tears, night had fallen.

She stared out at the lights from the nearby buildings reflecting off the deep blue and watched as a water taxi pulled into the nearby stop.

Her stomach grumbled, a reminder that dinnertime had come and gone. Another tear escaped as reality crashed over her once more.
