They spent two days huddled in her apartment, and she refused to answer the phone or even check her email, though Leo continued to monitor his phone and emails. It wasnât like Cordelia to be so irresponsible with other peopleâs time, and she knew she had commitments, but she couldnât face the thought of leaving the safety of the apartment. Plus, she was enjoying spending the extra time with Leo, as they learned each otherâs bodies and preferences. They were quickly moving from friends to lovers to a relationship. She didnât want to threaten the fragile cocoon in which she had found solace.
Unfortunately, she had given Belva keys to her apartment, and the blonde woman stormed in at the beginning of the third day, wearing a ferocious frown. âIâm glad to see youâre still alive,â she said in a clipped voice.
Cordelia flinched, dropping her coffee cup. It landed heavily in the sink, but didnât break. âJesus, Belva, could you be any more abrupt and horrible?â
Belvaâs expression softened, and she nodded. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean it like that, of course. I just wasnât thinking except about being irritated with how youâre avoiding me and your obligations.â
She was aware of Leo coming in from the bedroom, standing near the doorway, but not coming farther into the room. He was giving the appearance of privacy while still maintaining her security. She appreciated the gesture and shot him a small smile before turning back to Belva. âIâm sorry Iâve been ducking you, but Iâm just not ready to get back out there. I totally freaked out with Bruce.â
Belva lifted a shoulder. âWhat does it matter? Everyoneâs entitled to a diva moment, and thatâs all he thought it was, if anything. If youâd just tell people about your stalkerââ
Cordeliaâs shook her head emphatically, frowning at her assistant. âNo, absolutely not. I refuse to turn this into some kind of PR stunt, or have people take it less seriously because Iâm blabbing to everyone. If and when the person scaring me is caught, I might decide to mention it then, but only if it benefits someone else, like for a charity or something. Iâm not going to use it for publicity.â
Belva sighed, and then shrugged. âOkay, fine. Itâs your choice, of course, but you canât keep canceling your bookings. Pretty soon, you wonât have any bookings at all if you keep this up.â
âIâm just not ready.â
Looking frazzled, Belva said, âYouâre due in Paris tomorrow for the start of Fashion Week. Are you really going to blow that off? You know what an opportunity that is.â
Cordelia nodded, her stomach twisting. She had been invited to model a couple of years in a row now at Paris Fashion Week, but this time, she had been exclusively booked by Marilyn Kramer, the top up-and-coming designer in the field.
It was a coup to be the star of her show, and Marilyn had designed the entire choreography of movement around her. She would wear Marilynâs best pieces, and their partnership would boost both their careers.
