ANISE’S GAZE MET Bishop’s over the top of the monitor. He’d stopped himself half a dozen times from calling her in the past few days. When he’d found out about the apartment, he’d pumped his fist and whispered “yes.” The place might give him the break he needed in the case, but it also provided him a good reason to get in touch with her as well. As long as he could claim it was necessary for the investigation…

“I didn’t think you meant to wait outside.”

He could tell she was being honest. The idea had never entered her mind that it might be dangerous for her to go into the apartment without him. Bishop didn’t know if that was a good thing or not.

“Did you touch anything besides the computer?”

She blushed. “There’s a bottle of perfume in the bathroom. I picked it up.”

“It’s not yours, I take it?”

She shook her head. “I had no idea Kenneth had this apartment, Bishop. When you called and told me, I was shocked. Ask the manager. She’ll tell you she never saw me before tonight. How did you find it?”

He walked into the bedroom and came to the desk. “I emptied his desk last week. I had Carter look at everything but he said he didn’t find anything. When I decided to look for myself, I found a receipt for the rent.”

“I guess it’s a good thing you did.” She nodded and motioned him closer. “Look at this.”

He moved to her side and leaned over, his hands spread on either side of the laptop. He could smell her shampoo.

Then he read the e-mail. Robin Estes’s name was in the sender box.
