A hand closed over Jon’s shoulder, and he glanced up. The captain peered curiously at Tom as the first mate walked forward to take his place opposite a great, swarthy bear of a man.

“What’s going on, nephew?” asked Baltsaros, his brows high.

Jon smiled blandly. Nephew.

“Just making a little money, uncle,” he replied.

Baltsaros’s eyes widened at Jon’s assumed accent, but he didn’t comment. Instead, he turned to focus on the two men in the ring.

Tom and the dark-haired brute placed their hands on the spear as the crowd counted down. When the cheer went up, Jon saw Tom’s muscles bulge as he struggled to pull the spear out of the other man’s hands.

“They’re a little mismatched, aren’t they?” murmured Baltsaros.

Jon frowned; Tom’s opponent stood a few finger widths taller than the first mate, and his shoulders bulged with great corded muscles under the dark hair that covered his torso. Jon felt a momentary pang of worry.

When Baltsaros saw the look on Jon’s face, he laughed and pointed at Tom.

“No, I meant the other way,” he grinned. “Watch.” As he spoke, the first mate let out a grunt and pulled while twisting away. As easy as taking a sweet from a child, the spear was plucked from his opponent’s grasp.

The crowd roared.

Jon let out a cry and pumped a fist into the air. He was, he suddenly realized, thoroughly enjoying himself.

Tom’s lips spread in a cheeky grin, and he spread his arms to take a quick bow, twirling the spear lazily in one hand as he straightened and stood waiting for the next man to step forward.

Beside Jon, Baltsaros collected the winnings: a handful of doksha and a few ingots of gold. The captain smiled at him, the strange preoccupied look that he’d worn all morning replaced by amusement that mirrored Jon’s own.

The captain shouted something, and the crowd cheered; Jon saw Tom dip his head at Baltsaros before stepping forward to hold out the spear to the tall blond man who was to be his next opponent.

“What did you say?” asked Jon.

“I doubled the wager,” said Baltsaros, and his lips curled into a pleased grin. “Now let’s hope that Tom’s up for the challenge.”
