Chapter Seven

Josiah

Damn it all to hell.

I’d broken my rule. Not just my rule – thee rule any professional should have. No sleeping with the clients. No getting involved, at all. Then — I didn’t just sleep with him — I had to fall for Eric right when I laid eyes on him. I see that now. How could I have thought we would not be here, jammed side by side in my little bed?

He fell asleep with my phone right in his hand. I took it out of his palm and saw the browser was open. I didn't want to be nosy, but my job was to protect him. At least I wouldn’t fail at that. Even though I’d broken my no-sex-with-the-job rule, that didn't mean I wouldn’t complete my job. Whatever his reason for leaving home was, he still needed my protection. And as much as I hated the thought of it now, I was still getting paid to do the job.

Let's see what you were looking at, sexy.

I flipped through the history. He’d googled himself. He didn't think to erase the—

What the fuck?

I read various searches for brain cancer. There were some articles about his mom dying of it. Poor kid. But then, there were searches for modern advances in treatment and life expectancies. He’d leafed through some articles on new medicines and techniques since his mother had passed.

Just when I was thinking he was researching foundations to become involved with, search histories with phrasings like ‘how to tell a loved one you’re dying’. Shit. Shit, shit, shit. That changed everything. I frantically looked through more searches. ‘Hereditary cancer’, ‘Are brain tumors genetic?’ I wasn’t Einstein, but I could piece everything together. His sudden flight, coming out to a stranger, dancing on a pole, for Christ’s sake.

"Eri—Aiden! Aiden, wake up."

He fluttered his long lashes and opened his eyes. "Hmm? Josiah? Good morning."

"What the hell were you searching on my phone? Are you sick?"

"Huh? Josiah, what're you talking about." He sat up on the bed and rubbed his eyes. "Eh. I think I’m a little sore."

"Aiden, look at me." I was serious now. "Are you okay? Why are you googling shit about dying?"

Eric looked like a deer in headlights. He looked at me and down at the phone. My heart was breaking in a thousand pieces. This perfect guy – was he slowly going to just slip out of my hands?

"Aiden, please tell me this has nothing to—"

“What are you doing?” Eric sat up and snatched my phone. “Are you looking through my phone?”

I yanked it back. “It’s my phone. Answer me. Is this why you left? You have cancer?”

His brows furled down, and he ignored my question. “I don’t care whose phone it is. Why were you looking through the history? Why would you even think to do that?”

No. He’s not fucking switching the tables. “It doesn’t matter. You need to answer me.”

Eric threw the covers off and searched for something to cover himself with. “I don’t need to answer any of your damned questions, and it does matter.
