Chapter Eight

Clay paced anxiously back and forth before his SUV. He couldn’t take the waiting. In another minute he was going in, whether Matt showed up or not. Jackson leaned against the front of the vehicle with his arms crossed, watching Clay. He had made his phone calls while Jackson stood by with his eyebrows rising higher and higher with each call.

Finally, Matt’s truck pulled in beside Clay’s SUV. “This is going to get me suspended or worse,” he groused to them as he climbed down.

“Don’t count on it.” At Matt’s confused look, Clay simply gave him an enigmatic smile. “I wouldn’t worry about it. Let’s go.”

The three of them approached the receptionist, Matt stepping into the lead and flashing his badge at her. “We need to know the location of one of your rigs. This one.” He held up his phone, a picture of the side of the truck on the screen.

“I’m sorry but that’s private and confidential. I’m not allowed to give out that information.”

“This involves a case I am working on. I need that location immediately.”

“I am sorry, Detective, but company policy states that I can’t tell you anything without a warrant.”

Clay dug his claws into her desk. “Listen, you...” Clay snarled. “My husband’s life depends on it. Where is that damn truck?”

“Can I help you gentlemen?” Clay recognized the man approaching them as Rick Millar, the assistant manager.

After sending a warning look to Clay, Matt moved forward and displayed his badge again. “I need to know the whereabouts of one of your trucks.”

“Well, as I’m sure you were told, that simply isn’t possible.”

Clay pushed Jackson and Matt aside. He might not be able to smell deception or fear like Matt could, but his eyesight was a damn site better. Rick’s hairline was dotted with tiny droplets of sweat, his pupils were dilated and the hair on the nape of his neck was raised. Clay knew the signs, Rick was afraid.

Grabbing Rick by the throat, he lifted the man off his feet before hissing into his face.

“What’s going on out here?”

An older familiar looking man came out of an office and began making his way down the hallway towards them. “Rick?” He shook his head at Clay. “Please, put my assistant manager down. He’s turning blue and he definitely won’t be able to answer your questions if he can’t breathe.”

Clay released his fingers and Rick dropped to the floor in a heap. Scowling at the older man, Clay pointed a claw down in Rick’s direction. “We need to know where a truck is, and he won’t help.”

“He won’t?” The man shifted his gaze from Matt who still held his badge up in plain sight, down to Rick before frowning. “Rick? Since when do we refuse to help the police?”

“Probably since he had a hand in the kidnapping of my husband,” Clay snarled, taking a step towards the assistant manager, more than ready to vent his frustration on the downed man.

Matt quickly inserted himself between Clay and Rick. “Both your assistant manager and your receptionist insisted that we needed a warrant.
