Unless, I get injured. Then, I'm honorably discharged—and left making a career change.

But an honorable discharge wasn’t quitting, or surrendering, or failing—and Oz was ready for a change.

"Anyway, good luck with your new job," TJ added, "and thanks again for looking after my sister. Consider us even for Tajikistan."

"Thanks."

The fresh air felt good on Phoebe's face as she walked along the sidewalk toward the coffee shop.

Amyrtaeus appeared beside her. "Do you think Officer Levine will take the job?"

Phoebe gasped, startled. She wasn't sure if she'd ever acclimate to having a ghost appear on a whim beside her. Hopefully, if this trip to Egypt worked out, she wouldn’t have to.

Then she focused on Amyrtaeus’ words.

Officer?

Had Oz been an officer in the Marine Corps? She hadn't got many robust details about him from her brother. TJ had told her Oz and he had been in the Marines together and that Oz "owed him one."

"Maybe we can work on a system in which you dissolve into sight—slowly. If I keep jumping out of my skin every time you appear, Oz is going to think I'm crazy. He may already think that. Anyway, no—he's not agreed yet."

"Offer him more money."

"I'm not a pharaoh with access to unlimited gold and riches."

"You will be," Amyrtaeus grinned.

"Whatever we find in Egypt will belong to the Egyptian government. I'm not a grave robber."

"If you're not doing it for the money, why do it?"

"You need to move on, for one. I can’t have you hovering around me for the rest of my life. For two, you want to be reunited with your wife—and who can say no to that? And lastly—this will be a great archaeological find. A little publicity might put my humble museum on the map."

"Ah, notoriety—yes. Did you know the sphinx of my successor—Nepherites the First—is in the Louvre museum?"

"I did know that."

"Know it all." He waved an annoyed hand at her.

"What's your rush about making your way to your wife's tomb? You've made this entire thing seem very urgent, and it's escalating my anxiety."

"If you don't find it before you have to return the exhibit, I’ll have to wait until my exhibit lands with another medium."

Phoebe nodded as she walked along the sidewalk. "I have your emerald now. I can keep it longer, even if the exhibit goes back. Nobody else knows about it."

"…and," Amyrtaeus continued, "someone else is after the tomb, and the fortune it contains. A rather dubious gentleman once tried to goad the location out of me a few years ago. He oozed with greed. I didn't trust him."

"What does it matter to you who finds it, as long as it's found?"

"I’d like a person with a certain moral caliber to partake in the discovery. One careless, selfish move and I might never see my wife again."

"Okay—but that still doesn't explain the urgency. This dubious character doesn't have you, so he can't find the tomb, right?"

"Right," Amyrtaeus' agreement came out in a disgruntled tone, "and yet, something feels urgent about it."

"A sixth sense?" Phoebe teased.
