Chapter Twenty-Six

"Are you all right?" Death's hand on my shoulder shocked me from the vision, or memory, or whatever the hell it was. It was definitely a memory, but it was so much more than that. It had felt like I was really there. I coughed, clearing my throat, the taste of smoke still coated my tongue, and when I drew a deep breath in through my nose, the scent was as strong as ever. I blinked back my tears as I climbed unsteadily to my feet.

"I need to speak to Dumitra and Zenobia," I said, "they can help, I know they can."

"They will expect your help in return," he said quietly.

"I know, and I don't care... Whatever they want, I'll do it... I just know that I can't keep going like this. I need to know the truth and to get it, I need my memories back. There has to be a way for me to restore them, and I'm not going to find it by moping around here."

Death didn't say anything, just followed me as I moved through the apartment. I grabbed my jacket and turned, bumping into his solid chest in my haste.

"There's an easier way," he said. "You can call them."

"Call them?" I stared up at him. "I don't have a number for them."

Death shook his head and glanced down at Havoc who was at that moment lying next to his foot, batting at the shadows that swirled and trailed at Death's feet. "I can show you, if you'd like."

"Anything that saves time, but how do you know them?" It was a stupid question and I regretted it the moment it left my mouth.

Death grinned at me. "There are few I don't know, little harbinger," he said, "the Fates and I go back a long way."

"Noree didn't pretend that she knew you," I said.

"She knew not to interfere," he said, holding his hand out to me. "If you trust me, Darcey, I can show you how to call the Fates."

My stomach churned, my nerve suddenly failing me as I stared at his outstretched hand. What was wrong with me? Of course I trusted him. There was a part of me that felt as though I had always known him, that we meant more to one another than just Death and his harbinger.

I took his hand, his fingers enfolding mine gently as he tugged me closer. I lifted his other hand and the Bone Blade was suddenly there. I stared at the sharp blade as my heart started to thud a little faster inside my chest. As though he could sense my reservations, the light in his eyes dimmed.

"I would not hurt you," he said. He turned the blade over so the handle was pointed toward me and he urged me to take it. He closed his hand over mine, guiding my hand so that the blade was positioned over his bare chest.

"What are you doing?" I tried to pull my hand back but he held firm, forcing the blade down onto his skin.
