AZRAEL glided on the warmer currents and drifted past low-lying clouds with a half-lidded laziness. The pit had drained her, but now her magic guided her to Michael and the dark soul who accompanied him. She strained to decipher who it might be and why Michael would stand with a supernatural.

It seemed even stranger when she realized that Michael was near Leocivat. Lights sprinkled the ground and silhouettes of ancient towers speared into the sky. If he’d achieved his dreams of working for the king, she’d imagine him a minstrel, playing his lute in front of gallantly dressed ladies and mesmerizing the court with his wit and unique charm. He wouldn’t have need to fraternize with evil, would he?

She drew closer and marveled at the spectacle of the great bonfires and torches that blazed from the castle’s peaks. The city surrounding it lit up with warm lanterns and a soft bustle of nighttime activity. She wanted to see Leocivat up close. Even if she could hide her supernatural appendages, her magic was leading her to the outskirts, a darker place of swirling grey hugging the sea.

Instead, she propelled forward on the fresh burst of adrenaline that surged through her veins.

She saw Michael first. His unmistakable ice-blue eyes gazed at her with both hope and wonder. Although they’d seem darker than they’d once been, he grinned with undiluted amazement. She realized that he’d never seen her in her angelic form.

But then the form behind him revealed itself. Hyanthia waltzed into view, her tail lashing and her lips spreading over fangs in a gruesome grin.

Azrael staggered and Light flashed through her body as instinct took over. She was a conduit for the Light, and even though she did not always command it, it responded to her. The more she used it, the more it shared her will, especially now when Azrael held no doubt about the evil that stood before her. She lunged, hands outstretched and ready to choke the life from Hyanthia’s throat. This was the creature who had killed her family and she wouldn’t hesitate for a second time to claim justice.

Michael launched fearlessly between them. “No!” he cried.

Azrael jerked to a halt, but not from Michael’s cry. Hyanthia shared a connection with Xorn, the demon who had changed them both. Azrael’s deal had made her queen at the price that she couldn’t kill Xorn. A twist in
