I couldn't feel much until I felt too much. My cheek grated against the sandy shore. I army crawled as I dragged out Nin, my dagger clutched in my hand. I saw thick jungle over our heads and the starry sky above the canopy. Suvannamaccha’s in-between took us back to Patal.

My relieved gulp of air was quickly replaced by my retching black water out of my lungs. Nin lay limply on her back. Her hair was plastered over her face that was a pale circle in the dark. Her tail was a lifeless chord beside her.

"Nin," My voice was hoarse. "Nin!" I slapped her cheeks, but her eyes stayed closed and her lips were pressed together. I roller her onto her side and slapped her back. Sticking two fingers into her mouth, I shoved them down her throat. "Come on! Don't die!" I pleaded. "Shit. I don't know how to get out of this place!"

Her entire body shuddered and she convulsed. Her tail curled in a spasm. She gagged on my fingers and her eyes bulged. I barely got out of the way in time.

If I thought my expulsion was unsightly, Nin had me beat. The water seemed to come and come in buckets. When she lifted herself up on her elbows and heaved, I breathed a sigh of relief. My limbs buckling under me, I collapsed onto the sand. Above us, the branches began to fill with life as monkeys clued onto our location and began to be drawn to Nin and her weird monkey whisperer power.

Nin sat up and looked around herself. Then her eyes found me. I couldn't see her in the dark, but I felt her eyes burrow into me with a mixture of awe and reproach.

"So, which portion of that was you being a charming man?"
