Permanent Scars
The detective thrust the door open, knowing that his sudden arrival would be shocking in the silent room. He pushed the door shut with his fingers for the same reason, the resulting slam echoing off the walls as he moved toward his seat. The chair legs scraped on the floor and he grunted as he lowered his bulk into it. He barely acknowledged the woman sitting on the business side of the table. She looked barely awake, cuffed hands in her lap, leaning slightly forward so that her hair hung in her face.
He placed an old fashioned tape recorder on the table, pressed down play and record, and set it on the table between them. He looked at his watch and opened the file that was sitting on the table. "Three-fourteen in the morning, Detective Charles Timbale conducting interrogation of suspect. Please state your name and occupation for the record."
The woman across from him lifted her head as if she'd just realized he was there. She looked at the tape recorder. "Jesus, you're still using that."
"Whatever works." He tapped the table. "Your name and occupation, please."
She sighed. "Mackenzie Crowe. I'm a private investigator."
"Where were you this evening between the hours of ten and midnight?"
"I was on a stakeout on Elbridge Gerry Street, where it meets the waterfront. I got there at eight, and I was there until you guys came and got me at a little past twelve-thirty."
Timbale nodded. "And where was your partner during all of this?"
"Hasn't she told you that already?"
He finally made eye contact with her. "Your partner isn't talking very much, so we thought we'd give you a chance to fill in the blanks. Even if she had told us something, we'd like to make sure your stories match up. So if you please, for the record, where was Chelsea Stanton during the hours of ten and midnight?"
Kenzie took a deep breath. "I'd like a lawyer, please."
Timbale smiled sadly. "Is that the way we're going to handle this?"
"Lawyer, please."
Timbale shut off the tape recorder and stood up. He scratched the side of his nose. "No one wants this, you know. We all know how this needs to go, and we all know what you need to say to get out of here. So why don't you just say it and save us all some trouble?"
Kenzie kept her eyes on the mirror. "Lawyer."
Timbale shook his head and carried the tape recorder away from the table. He paused with his hand on the knob and suddenly turned to face her. "Why the hell are you doing this, Kenzie? We know that you know what she did. You were around back then. Chelsea Stanton has this coming. So just tell us that you don't know where she was tonight and end this right now."
"Go to hell, Timbale."
The detective closed his eyes and shoved away from the table. "You'll both go down for it. It's either her, or both of you. No one wants that."
Kenzie took a breath and let it out slowly through her nostrils.
