The shooter was transferred from booking to a holding cell. Officer Sam Cooley crossed the bullpen and scanned the crowd. Riley walked up to him and put a hand on his shoulder. âWho are you looking for?â
âYou, actually. The suspect demands to speak with you.â
Riley kept walking. âWeâll talk when his lawyer gets here.â
âHe doesnât want a lawyer. At least, he hasnât asked for one yet.â
Riley stopped and looked toward the holding cells. âDid he ask for the cop who arrested him, or did he ask for me by name?â
âHe said âI want to talk with Detective Parra.ââ
âGreat,â Riley muttered. She could make three guesses what a personal request meant. The shooting might not have been as straightforward as she thought. She sighed and said, âAll right. Take him to the interrogation room. The one with the camera, not the two-way mirror.â
âYes, detective.â
âOfficer, be careful with him. Did you see Silence of the Lambs?â
âI read the book.â
Riley said, âImpressive. Well, just think of Hannibal in Tennessee. Donât take your eyes off this prick for a second.â
âYes, maâam.â
Riley went to her desk and caught Priestâs eye across the room. She motioned her partner over, and Priest weaved through the crowd. âWhatâs up?â
âI think the shooter works for Marchosias. He asked to see me personally.â
âThat canât be good.â
Riley shook her head. She braced her hands against the desk and closed her eyes. âLook, I would like you to have my back in there...â
âYouâve got it. Whatever you need.â
âNo. I meant thatâs what I want. But I think Lieutenant Hathaway needs you more. Get to the hospital. Stay with her.â
Priest hesitated. âRiley, Iâm your guardian angel. I donât know how much good I can do withââ
âTry, goddamn it,â Riley snapped.
Priest looked like she wanted to argue some more, but she caught the look in Rileyâs eye and knew she would lose. âAll right. Iâll do what I can.â She put her hand on Rileyâs shoulder and said, âPromise me you will stay safe. Just because we know he works for Marchosias, that doesnât mean we know what heâs capable of.â
âIâll be careful. Thanks, Caitlin.â
âYouâre welcome. Iâll keep you apprised of the situation.â
Riley watched Priest leave the room, then left her desk to visit the interrogation rooms. She saw Cooley and another officer standing outside of Interrogation Room One, both standing at attention like Buckingham Palace guards. Cooley spotted her and gave a nod. She said, âIs he still cuffed and chained?â
âYes, maâam. Ankles chained together, wrists secured to the table.â
âGood man.â Riley knew she was risking the reputation of overkill, but she doubted any of the cops in the station would call her out over it. The punk shot a cop; whatever Riley wanted to do with him would probably be fair game. She said, âIâm going to let him sit for a while. Donât leave this door unattended even for a second. Get another officer to stand against this wall facing the door.â
Cooley nodded and used his radio to call for another officer.
