IT WAS DEAFENING.

Rage.

Terror.

Pain.

Frustration unlike anything I’d ever felt before.

It was all exploding out of me in a roar that tore through the parking lot.

After the commotion I’d heard down the line when I’d been talking to Abi, I’d pinged her phone and tracked it to this lot, where me and Slade had found it on the ground beside her truck. I couldn’t get what I’d heard in the background of that call out of my head.

The terror in her voice had sparked the same in me.

I’d been riding like a maniac with a death wish, but it still hadn’t been fast enough to head that bastard off and get here in time.

He had her.

I’d failed.

Again.

Just like the battle with the Strikers MC, I’d failed to protect what mattered to me.

Just like that night, I’d been too slow.

This was even worse, though.

I knew my club brothers could hold their own against a hell of a lot. But Abi wasn’t hardened and experienced like we were. She couldn’t protect herself like they could. Nah, that was supposed to be my job.

And, worst of all, this situation was all my fault.

I’d pushed this. To say I’d had tunnel vision about dealing with that fucker didn’t even begin to cover it. Taking him out of the equation was all I’d cared about. Now she’d suffered, because of me. She’d come down here to block my way and talk some sense into me, because—wait—because of Slade.

I spun around, thundering, “You did this! You manipulated her into coming here to stop me, thinking she was your best chance to buy time until you could take action yourself! He took her because of you!”

Slade eyed me steadily as he leaned against his bike.

We were standing around like a bunch of dumbasses, waiting on the calls we’d made to our contacts to yield some results with some idea on where the fuck Gabriel had taken Abi. He had so many holdings, it was like trying to find a needle in a blazing haystack.

As I glared at Slade, anger flared. He’d had the same laid-back disposition since we’d ridden in here about fifteen minutes ago. Cool. Calm. Collected. Like nothing major had happened. Like a maniac hadn’t taken my woman. Like there wasn’t blood on the hood of her truck, brutal proof that Gabriel had already hurt her bad enough to make her fucking well bleed.

Slade’s lack of reaction had made it worse. It left me alone in my tornado of despair, rage, pain, and frustration. A part of me knew that it was deeper than that, that I was giving his reaction too much weight. And that part registered some resentment that he was able to pull that unaffected thing off. It was basically holding a mirror up to me and reflecting back what I wasn’t anymore. Slade and me had made such a great, unstoppable team, because we’d both had that extreme coolness and levelheadedness under overwhelming pressure. But since the shooting, with all the shit it’d sparked in me, I’d lost that.
