Bad News

Sarah watched as Charlie fell asleep. She was tempted to read his email but decided against it. The young man confused her. He seemed so strong and independent, but there was a fear within him that kept him closed off and wary. Watching him made her want to wrap him in a hug and tell him it would all be okay. It had nothing to do with wanting to comfort an omega; it was just a mother who wanted to help and take care of the young man.

She looked over at her daughter and wondered if Charlie had ever been as happy and carefree. Then she prayed that she could protect her daughter from whatever horrible things Charlie had to endure that had caused him to hide what he was.

Hopefully, as he learned to trust Zach, he would open up and finally learn that there was nothing to be ashamed of and that not all Alphas should be feared.

She closed her eyes and sighed. Then she opened them again and slowly made her way out of the room. As much as she wanted to worry about Charlie and her daughter’s future, right now, she had to worry about the present and the problems it held. She could worry about the future later.

She tried to think of a plan as she made her way downstairs. She needed to get her father to willingly break the pack bond with Emily before he found out what she was. But he was a little possessive and protective of his family. He didn’t like when his children did things that went against his own desires for them. Emily leaving his pack definitely went against what he wanted.

As she approached her brother’s office door, she raised her hand to knock, but something held her back. So instead, she opened the door to find Matt and Zach seated on the couch. They were close, and when she entered, they both moved apart from each other. It wasn’t done in an obvious way. Just a small shift made by both, but she had seen it.

And it broke her heart.

She had been so sure when they were younger that they would get together and end up happily mated. She was positive it would have been a mating, not a marriage. Their wolves were too in sync for anything else. Or so she had thought. She knew they had tried it. She’d never gotten the whole reason on why they’d broken up. She knew their families had played a big role in it, but she also knew there had been something more. Something that no matter how she asked or how drunk she got them, she’d never found out.

“Hey,” she said, moving to sit on the couch. She chose the end, pushing the two of them to move closer to make space for her.

“Any ideas?” She asked.

“I voted for kidnapping her,” Matt said with a tight smile. She heard Zach growl under his breath. Whatever it was they had been talking about before she entered, it hadn’t been kidnapping her daughter.
