Unlike Granny, Janey loved skiing, but she was no expert. So the sight of the moguls tumbling down the steep hill under the chair lift had her feeling a little queasy. It didn’t help that Max was making the chairlift sway.

“Stop,” she said, and when he didn’t, she punched him in the arm. He grinned at her, but the chairlift steadied. A winter sun streamed down, warm enough to make them take off their mitts to cool their sweaty hands. Charlie had met two former work colleagues and was riding up with them, so Janey and Max had the chair to themselves.

Max fiddled with a buckle on his boot, then sat up and sighed. “This is good,” he said, and it took Janey a moment to realize he wasn’t talking about the fit of his footwear. He twisted to look at the mountain behind them, taking in the pattern of the runs on Larch and the curl of smoke from Temple Lodge.

“As good as your Alps?” Janey asked teasingly.

Max considered her question seriously.“Different, I think. These Rockies are much more…wild. People have lived in our Alps for many, many centuries.”

“People have lived here for just as long,” Janey said, remembering Mary and her family. “But the First Nations didn’t build castles or churches to leave their mark. They moved around, depending on where the food was.”

Max nodded.“Yes. When you have mountains like these, you don’t need cathedrals to scratch at the sky.”

“Those are nice too, though,” she said. She touched his hand. Startled, Max looked first at his hand and then at her.

“I…I want to say again that I’m sorry,” Janey rushed on. “I’m sorry about what I said about your mum. And this horrible thing with your dad. I didn’t know.”

Max studied her. “Thanks.” A grin snuck across his face. “You do have an interesting temper.” Before Janey could respond, he held up his hands. “But yesterday, at the museum, I was a jerk. I’m sorry too.”

Janey ignored the comment about her temper. “That’s okay. Now I get why you were so upset. But the detective’s phone calls last night and the night before are good news, right?”

“Yes. It was the first good news we’ve had in many weeks. I hope…I hope they find him soon.”

“It’ll happen,” Janey said. They settled back into a friendly silence. This was good, she thought. Max was actually okay. But he hadn’t mentioned anything about being at the internment camp yesterday. Still, given everything that was going on in his life, it made sense that he didn’t want to believe he’d time-travelled with her. Too much crazy right now. Yet the more she thought about it, the more she believed they had gone back together. It was just a matter of figuring out why.

“What do you think…” she began, but they’d reached the end of the lift and he was getting ready to jump off.

“Race you,” he challenged.

She slid off the lift after him and they skied toward the top of the run where they’d agreed to wait for Charlie.
