4 AM

With a trembling hand, I slip my key into lock, turn it and slide the door open, carefully moving so that I don’t make any noise.

I notice that the light is turned on in the living room, the way I left it. And while I’m hoping that Kiara is still here, I can’t face her unless I change and put myself together, so I tiptoe to the bathroom.

Heart pounding in my throat, I take off my coat and remove my dress before I take off my shoes.

Listening to my gut, I lock the door before I turn the water on and spin to the mirror.

My heart stops.

“Oh, my God...” I murmur.

My body looks like a war zone.

I still have some of the old marks on my skin now morphed into pale yellowish shadows, but the new ones crisscross my body, reading like bloody telegrams.

The touch of his fingers imprinted on my neck in purplish-reddish outlines. The traces of his teeth adorning my neck like strings of violet pearls.

The root of my neck has a choker style band of redness that by tomorrow might will turn mauve with my luck. My thighs are mottled, red, and blue.

I find the marks left by his bites and also the hitches on my neck, shoulders, and my chest.

I’m sure I have his blood under my nails too.

I look like a crime scene.

A firm knock on the bathroom door, makes me shoot out a scream. Hurriedly, I pick the fluffiest robe, wrap it around my body, close it up to my neckline, and crack the door open.

My mouth falls open, my eyes going wide like saucers.

“Lainey? What are you doing here?”

She looks down at me.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

“I’m taking a shower. You?”

“Can I come in?”

She sports a mini dress, sheer stockings, and heels. She must’ve come from the party and hasn’t changed her clothes.

Why is she here?

“No. I need to take a shower first.”

A knowing smile curls her lips.

“Where were you?”

“Out.”

She gives me a teasing smile.

“Where?”

I’m really not in the mood.

“Out.”

“Kiara said something about my boss.”

“Is she still here?”

“Mmm-Hmm. She called me.”

“Why?”

She shrugs.

“I don’t know. She’s having some kind of a meltdown, but I don’t know what the problem is. She’s not saying much. Just that she has to figure her life out. Aren’t we all?”

“Yes, we are. Now, let me take a shower.”

I push the door closed. She opens it again.

“Is it true about you and my boss?”

“What did she tell you?” I ask, my hand on the doorknob.

“That you hooked up with him... And then something about her losing work because of that. She made absolutely no sense.”

My hands turn cold.

“She was probably delirious. I don’t know what she had to drink or where or with whom, but she was hammered.”

“Yeah... I got that. She cried as she was telling me her life story. And that was after a cup of coffee and some sleep that I think helped her with her intoxication. I couldn’t make sense of what she said.
