Felix Klein (1849−1925)

Felix Klein was even more of a mathematical politician than Mittag-Leffler. In his youth he made a name for himself in research, but found the competition too strong. Instead he began, while still quite young, to find his true vocation in what might be described as scientific policy making. Already at Erlangen he not only presented a unified view of geometry in his famous program but also outlined his ideas for the reform of mathematics teaching. First in Leipzig and then, crucially, in Göttingen he worked to revitalize the subject by restoring the close links between mathematics and its applications. His influence was strongest in Germany but he also had some influence on the development of the subject in the United States. His expository work, both in speech and in writing, was of an exceptionally high standard.
