CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Cerri stared for a moment, taking the woman in. Her long black hair was frosted blonde and was wavy like her sonâs. He had her brown eyes and her nose and maybe the smile. She felt some of the anxiety at Zainâs looks melt completely away.
Zain must have noticed the total immersion and said, âYouâre not star struck, I hope.â
Cerri quickly turned to face him. âNo. Not in the way you think. I was just assessing how much you look like her.â
He laughed. âI do. You should see a picture of my great-grandfather. It would give you a hint at what Iâll look like, when Iâm a month shy of a hundred.â
His gaze snared with hers and her pulse flickered and pulsed.
She quickly averted her eyes and turned back to face Qadesh, who seemed to be assessing her now. She was proven right when the woman said, âYou have very expressive eyes. They give a lot away.â
She dipped her head, hoping they hadnât given Ms. Bishara more information than she wanted her to have. About her son.
As if knowing sheâd caught on to Cerriâs feelings, Qadesh said, âZain, order Cerridwen a glass of wine.â
He nodded and scanned the area for their waitress and with a wave of his hand, she headed over. âWhat would you like?â
âA glass of Cabernet, please.â
The waitress nodded and when she returned with it, Qadesh said, âCerridwen is a beautiful name. Very well known in Celtic lore.â
Cerri laughed. âI grew up wondering where my parents came up with it. It set me apart when I was younger, thatâs for sure. No one could pronounce it. Some used a hard c, others a soft c. Some pronounced it as Kerry, some as Cari. No one really knows what to do with it.â
Qadesh patted her hand. âI think itâs appropriate for the woman youâve become. The goddess was associated with the sacred dark, as are you. You have an ear open to what lies below, and those shrouded in mystery.â
Zain sat back, shaking his head. âDo you know we use shrouds instead of body bags here?â
Qadesh laughed. âNo, I didnât. I couldnât even tell you the difference between them. It is even more apropos than I thought.â
Cerri was studying the woman again, seeing a bit of Hina there, the knowingness that came from a sixth sense, or some cosmic consciousness. Before she could think more deeply about that, Qadesh said, âZain tells me that you have a circle of friends who meet every month to celebrate life. He asked if Iâd be willing to join you when you host it next weekend.â
There was a niggle of excitement at the prospect. Cerri tried to relax by taking a sip of wine. It did nothing to settle her nerves. Not wanting to put the woman on the spot, she said, âI know youâre probably busy and might not be able to accommodate us, but weâd love to hear some of your stories.â
âAnd I would love to share the energy and hear some of your stories.
