Chapter Nine
Kerri watched as Tom racked up yet more prize tickets at the skee-ball machine. The kid was amazing. She’d never been very good at rolling the wooden balls into anything but the lowest slot, but Tom was the master. It was as if he’d been born to hurl the balls through the fifty-point slot every time.
He looked back at her and held up a finger, asking the question with his eyes.
“One more game,” she answered. “I’ll wait outside.”
She’d eaten so many pancakes at breakfast she needed the salt air to keep her awake, though at the moment she’d like nothing better than to head back to the efficiency and take a nap.
Her face had begun to throb, but she’d located a pair of large sunglasses and some aspirin at one of the boardwalk variety stores. She hadn’t drawn any stares since, so she figured the glasses must have hidden most of her bruising.
She sank onto one of the benches outside the arcade and wrapped her arms around herself, thinking about last night’s lovemaking, much as she’d tried to block all thoughts of Wade from her mind.
She ached this morning in all the right places. Her marriage to John had grown so distant and cold before his death she honestly couldn’t remember how many years it had been since she’d made love. And she’d never made love to anyone with the passion she’d felt for Wade last night.
Kerri shot a glance at Tom, wondering if he’d done as she’d asked or whether he’d sneaked in a second extra game.
Thankfully, he’d slept straight through the night. She and Wade had made every effort to be quiet, although that had proved next to impossible in the small space.
As she watched Tom roll yet another fifty-point ball, she had the sensation of being watched and turned slightly to look over her shoulder.
Wasn’t that the same man who’d been sitting outside the pancake house earlier?
She kept a casual eye on the man, not wanting him to catch her staring. Could he be following them? Could he be the man from Pine Ridge? Or the van? Or the cabin?
Her stomach tightened, fear taking hold and squeezing at her insides.
The man was wearing a ball cap, making it all the more difficult to see his features. Kerri took a deep breath and held it. Her imagination might be working overtime, but her instincts told her otherwise.
Tom appeared by her side a few moments later, and she stood, linking her arm through his and hurrying him away from the arcade.
“Mom.”
“We’ll come back later.” She lied, having no intention of bringing her son out in the open again.
She’d been an idiot to bring Tom out to breakfast—out on the boardwalk, for heaven’s sake. So what if she was so angry with Wade she could spit? That was no reason to take chances—foolish chances.
“Mom.” Tom stopped dead in his tracks. “Bumper cars. You promised.”
Kerri looked down into her son’s pale eyes and weakened. She didn’t want to alarm him when she might be imagining things.
