Phil shivered. He was unbelievably cold, but he knew Brandon still had him in his arms. He opened his eyes and turned to look at his mate. Brandon’s eyes were closed but he wasn’t asleep. He radiated power as he lay with his arm over Phil. When he opened his eyes, heat shot through Phil’s body and he broke out in a sweat. The power emanating from Brandon grew more intense and the god of darkness sat up.

“I can’t cure you, but I can damn sure ease your pain.” He held a hand over Phil’s chest and pushed energy into him.

Phil cried out, his body unused to holding so much power within him. As he did, his grandfather came into view, kneeling beside the bed and taking his hand.

“Try not to control it. Just let it flow through you,” he whispered.

Phil writhed on the bed, sweat pouring off him and his vision blurring. There was another force colliding with Brandon within him. The pain was excruciating. It was as if small explosions were going off all over his body.

“Stop!” Fenrir called out to Brandon. “His body cannot take any more.”

Brandon’s power receded and Phil went limp.

“Damn it!” he swore.

“I sent word to Ares. Your aunt is working on it. She’s bringing in Merlin to help.” Fenrir stood up. “If there is a way out of this, we’ll find it.”

Brandon got off the bed. “If we don’t, there’s not a force in existence that will stop me from slaughtering everyone descended from Erebus and Nyx. I don’t give a damn about their allegiance.”

Fenrir said nothing. He understood the motivation all too well, but he also understood innocent lives would pay the price. Something had to give.
