Chapter 12

WILLOW

“You have one more chance. Give them up. Don’t let their decisions take your life.”

I glare at Gabriel, hating the plea in his eyes. “I’m going to have fun haunting your ass.”

He runs the back of his hand down my cheek. Then something odd crosses his expression, something akin to sadness. Remorse. His jaw tightens as a he lets out a long sigh full of disappointment. “Don’t fight them. Let it be quick.”

He nods to the two men standing by a dingy on the water. One, a burly man with jet black hair, wearing a suit jacket paired with jeans and three gold chains gets on. The little boat rocks violently, and I burst out laughing as he flails, but he finally manages to sit without falling over.

The other, much older, with a white beard that reaches his potbelly, no shirt and camouflage shorts over skinny legs, flicks his cigarette into the mud, then easily gets in and sits by the motor. He yanks the cord to start it, and when it sputters, he pulls a mallet from under him and taps it a few times. This is obviously his boat, probably has been for years. He seems like an interesting man and I bet he could tell me a story or two. But I guess I don’t have time for that right now.

With a shove, I’m escorted to sit between the two while Adrian is placed facing me. We eye each other, wordlessly trying to give one another hope. Hope that it will be quick. Hope that there won’t be hell to pay on the other side. Literally.

Sweat trails between my shoulder blades and pools in my palms. I wonder if Adrian has this same strange anxiety. All night, it kept me awake, and I paced like a prisoner on death row. I suppose that, in a way, I was. Though I spent a lot of that time thinking of Adrian, wishing I were spending my last night on Earth beside him, even if it was in a dank cell.

When I did sleep, I awoke startled, feeling claws being dragged over my skin, and I wondered if it was the ghosts that lived in the house, desperate to claim my soul too.

My gaze shifts to Gabriel, then to Bella, who’s standing somberly beside him. The way they look as if they’re already mourning our deaths, you’d think they were at a funeral procession and not the actual ones sending us to those deaths!

“Now don’t you be tryin’ nothin’,” the old man says to us with a voice made rough by what I’m sure has been a lifetime of smoking. “If’n you do, Leo here will shoot you dead.”

I turn steely eyes to him. “Isn’t that what he’s planning to do anyway? So it doesn’t matter if I try something.”

Adrian laughs, and it earns him a poke in the back with the mallet. He quiets, but his grin remains.

“See you in ’bout an hour, Boss,” the old man tells Gabriel and, giving him a salute, moves us away from the shore.
