“Are you coming later on, then?”

“I’ll let you know,” I say to Lila as I wave her goodbye.

She throws me one last glance before she slips into a cab and pulls away.

I turn around and dash to the subway.

She wanted me to spend the night at her place since it’s Friday night and Michael is not in town. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but the adrenaline spiking in my blood and the bitter taste in my mouth after I learned about McKenna’s whereabouts, told me otherwise. I couldn’t spend one more minute with her without having a nervous breakdown.

Fists clenching and teeth grinding, I rush to catch a train. I can’t wait to get home.

He can’t be the asshole that he seems to be, but then again. Why the hell not? The man has so many secrets hidden in his fucked up heart.

I exit the train, jog home, and burst into my apartment as if my ass is on fire.

Seething with fury, I go straight to the closet.

This is not how this thing will go down, McKenna.

Feverishly, I rifle through a few hangers, pick up my clothes and slip into the shower. Tonight is not going to be the night I beg, plead or feel bad about his life. Or mine for that matter.

Fully-stocked with determination, I pull on my skintight dress, hop on my heels, throw my leather jacket on, fluff up my hair and paint a bloody pout. I know where I’m going so I stick a pepper spray into my pocket, just in case.

On my way to the door, I swipe my finger across the phone and call a cab. Minutes later, the car waits for me in front of the entrance.

After another half an hour, I hand the driver the fare, climb out of the taxi and look at the tall, dark building, rising not far from the river.

The top floor is lit, the many cars slithering into the underground parking, telling me that the party is in full swing.

The air is embalmed with a scented, warm breeze coming from the water.

I take a long breath and make a beeline for the elevator. A metallic whirring sound bounces against the concrete walls as the car begins to ascend.

The door slides open at my destination, and I roll out into full-fledged mayhem––thick smoke, intermingled voices, and shouts, all baked in the sound of the pounding music.

Men and women writhe their bodies and wave their arms, screaming in a collective madness. There are no fighters in the ring only the scantily dressed girls doing their rounds.

Several people bump into me as I freeze in the doorway.

“Are you lost, sweetie?” a man throws at me.

I glare at him.

He holds his hands up in a mockery apology, his friends laughing.

“She’s pissed. Leave her alone, man.”

One of his buddies pulls him away.

I swivel my head and spot Jackie. I veer to my left and walk down the corridor. My heels click-clack, the sound even, not at all rushed or nervous.
