I ended the call before Gina could say anything beyond her initial shriek—good, bad, or otherwise. Things had gone from crazy to downright insane in a matter of seconds, and matrimony wasn’t the kind of decision that required a third party.

“If we get married, then the records will be there,” he went on as though he were explaining simple arithmetic.

Me plus him equaled married.

I couldn’t marry Ranger… could I?

“No, Ranger.” I shook my head and stood, starting to pace the living room. “You can’t—this isn’t your problem.”

I wasn’t his problem.

“That doesn’t mean I’m incapable of fixing it,” he asserted, folding his arms, a thread of annoyance infiltrating his tone.

I’d heard it before. The day we’d gone to his office and met with his brothers. It was the same heightened frustration he had when he’d felt like they thought him incapable of protecting me.

“I know that, but…” I pressed my hand to my forehead, making sure this wasn’t just all a fever dream.

Ranger stepped in front of me, his expression as determined as ever.

“I promised you could count on me,” he insisted, his voice softer but still steady. “So, count on me, Sydney. Let me keep you safe.”

My lips peeled apart. Count on him. My heart stumbled in my chest, though I wasn’t sure if it was running away from this situation or running toward him.

If anyone had considered all the options and knew what to do, it was Ranger. I had to trust it was the right thing—I had to trust this marriage of convenience he proposed was the only way.

“And then we’ll get a divorce?”

His chin dipped. “When the paparazzi leave, and we find whoever is behind the threats.”

My life had been reduced to a romance trope… but at the end of the day, a trope was better than a train wreck. So, before I could think better of it, I nodded and agreed.

“Okay.” I shivered. “I’ll marry you.”
