Chapter Seven

“You’re going to do just fine.” Sloan took Greg’s wife’s hand in his, patting it reassuringly. Jane’s eyes were bright with excitement as she lay on the gurney in the hospital’s outpatient surgery center, not a single iota of anxiety marring her brow.

“You’re going to do fine,” Greg parroted.

It was plain to see that it was Greg, and not his wife, who needed comforting now that Jane was just about to undergo laser surgery. But Sloan went through the motions of crooning to the patient, for his partner’s sake. He’d work on assuaging Greg’s fears once Jane was in the operating room.

Jane had called Sloan last night and asked him if he could be available, not to support her, but to support her husband, during her surgery. Sloan had chuckled understandingly and promised Jane he’d be there to hold Greg’s hand. Sloan was finding that, even though the two of them had been married only a short time, Jane knew her husband well. Anxiety fairly snapped and sparked from Greg as he stood by his wife’s side.

Just then Jane’s gynecologist approached, greeted them all in an upbeat and positive manner, and ushered Jane off into the operating room.

Greg’s clouded gaze followed them. “You really think she’ll be okay?”

“Of course.” Sloan draped his arm around his friend’s shoulder, gently spinning him around. “Let’s go have a cup of coffee in the cafeteria while we wait. Before you know it, they’ll be calling you to sit with her until she’s alert enough to be taken home.”

The man allowed himself to be led away from the O.R. corridor. “You’re right.” His quiet tone was preoccupied, spoken almost to himself. “She’ll be fine.”

Sloan suppressed a smile. Doctors were towers of strength for their patients. Being so was part of the job. Nearly every day of the week, he watched Greg bolster the people who sought him out for medical help. But when a member of a physician’s family became ill, had an accident or needed surgery, the tower of strength quickly crumbled on its foundations. It was the emotional connection that detached a doctor from his or her normal professional objectivity.

Times like this called for friends who were willing to lend support. And Sloan was happy to do whatever he could to shore Greg up in this trying moment. Heaven knew, Greg—and Travis, too, for that matter—had certainly been there for Sloan when Olivia had been so ill.

“Not only will she be fine,” Sloan said, “but once she heals, you two can look forward to getting yourselves pregnant.”

This comment caused Greg to grin. He rubbed his abdomen. “Don’t think I’ll look too attractive being big as a barn.”

“You might not,” Sloan agreedu. “But Jane will glow. And if you make that barn comment in front of her, just make sure you’re ready to fend off the smack she’s going to give you.”

Greg laughed, nodding acceptance of the advice. Then his gaze grew serious. “I don’t have to tell you how important this is to Jane.
