CHAPTER 9

Something pushed against his upper arm. Ignoring it, the soft fur was there on his face, once again pushing his skin. Popping one eye open, Karter was surprised to find Boots sitting there clearly looking at him, as if he were somehow responsible for the cat’s bad mood.

When he tried to close his eyes, he felt claws slice his hand. Nothing deep, but it did pull up a few drops of blood. “Go away,” he told the cat, who just continued to stare at him as if he were the reason all was wrong with the world.

“You made me bleed.” He showed the stupid cat the drops of blood that had beaded up on his hand, but Boots didn’t appear impressed. If anything, he would swear the cat looked at him as if it were all his fault. That made no sense. “I didn’t do anything to you, you stupid cat,” he muttered, trying his best not to wake up Dane, who was holding him as if Karter were the most precious person in the world.

And damn, but that made him want to stay even longer. But the sun was out. Night was over. It was time to go home. Well, back to his hotel room anyway.

“Ow,” Boots cried softly, as if he too were trying not to wake Dane. Yet there was clearly something he wanted.

“Fine,” he grumbled as he carefully extradited himself from the one place he really didn’t want to leave. “I’ll feed you, but you can’t keep crying.”

Damn if that cat didn’t nod his acceptance of what Karter said. It had to have been his imagination, right?

Rolling up onto his feet, Karter softly walked around the room and collected his clothing. When he had everything, he went out into the living room and pulled them on despite how wrinkled everything was. Dreading the walk of shame he’d take on the way back to the hotel, Karter went into the kitchen and opened the cupboard he saw Dane use the night before when he was feeling the cats.

Hoping it was okay for him to feed them, he opened the can and put half in Dani’s dish and half in Boots’s dish. Then he picked up their water dish and filled it up. When he put it back on the floor, both cats came up to him, on the opposite side of his legs from each other.

“What is it?” he cooed to them, as he reached out to scratch the top of their heads. “You both want attention?” he asked them and damn if Boots didn’t give an ‘ow’ while Dani gave a ‘meow.’

There was no way they could understand him, yet they sure as hell seemed to. “I gotta go, but I’ve enjoyed getting to know both of you.” Technically, Dani more than Boots, since Boots bit him but still, he didn’t want either of them thinking he favored one over the other.

When he went to stand up, Boots moved right in front of him as if trying to stop him.
