An hour later, we were all cleaned up, dressed and packed, ready to give the amazing hotel suite back. I was feeling slightly bummed, because we’d had such a great time there. We had made some seriously insane memories in that hotel room…
If these walls could talk… Let’s just be glad they can’t.
Jessica volunteered to hang back and get us checked out while I gave Ryan a ride back to his apartment. We agreed that it might look sort of strange for us both to drop him off. So they said their goodbyes, and I couldn’t help but note the slightly glum looks on both of their faces as Ryan and I left Jess behind in the suite.
When we were securely inside the car, driving toward Ryan’s apartment, I took a moment to breathe again. It had been such a whirlwind, the past two days. I could barely even process everything that had happened.
Ryan was squeezing my hand over the center console, as he had been since the second we got settled in the car. He was gazing out the window, seemingly deep in thought. I wanted to ask him what he was thinking, but I was willing to bet I already knew what it was.
Where do we go from here? I’m going to miss him again… Just like every other time we leave each other. Nothing has changed now that Jess is in the picture. If anything, it just makes it all the more complicated.
“So…” I finally broke the silence, tracing his thumb with mine.
“So…” he repeated, resting his head back against the seat.
“Do you have any plans for this week?” I asked, trying to make conversation and lift the mood a little. “Other than school, I mean…”
“No,” he grunted, and said nothing else.
“No work, or anything coming up?” I pressed on.
“Uh-uh,” he shook his head.
“I could maybe try to find you something if you need money,” I offered. “I know some landscaping companies who might need part-time help.”
“Yea but aren’t they out by you?” he asked, turning his head slightly.
“Well, sort of…” I mumbled, racking my brain for any companies I knew that did jobs up this way.
“Forget it,” he grumbled. “It’s just… too far.”
“It’s not that far,” I huffed, though I didn’t really believe my argument. Five hours was far. I knew that was bumming him out.
“Yes, it is, Ben,” he bit out. “You’re going to be so far away from me. It’s not like I can just drive for five hours… There and back is like a whole day in travel.”
“Baby…” I whispered, shaking my head. He wasn’t talking about work. He was talking about us not being able to see each other. I already knew it.
“Baby what?” he turned to face me fully in his seat. I concentrated harder on the road. “What do you want me to do, Ben? Just forget about this and move on?”
“No,” my brow furrowed. “I don’t want you to forget…”
“Then what am I supposed to do?” His tone making me feel sick.
