CHAPTER SEVEN

KAYLA woke to find she was alone in the large bed, and she hastily checked the time, groaned then hit the shower.

Duardo would be at the airport about to board his flight to Melbourne, where he’d be in meetings all day, and therefore incommunicado, emergencies notwithstanding.

Requesting his approved list of contractors didn’t fall into the emergency category, she decided as she pulled on jeans, added a cotton top then twisted her hair into a careless knot atop her head.

Breakfast comprised fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast and coffee eaten on the terrace, and she had just poured her second coffee when Spence joined her, carrying a folder.

‘Duardo suggested you might like to check through these.’

These were a comprehensive sheaf of papers detailing various contractors, shop-fitters, tradesmen. Another outlining real estate owned by the Alvarez consortium, together with properties up for tender in a few of the city’s upmarket suburbs.

Kayla indicated a chair. ‘Join me in a coffee.’

She skimmed through the paperwork with a sense of mounting disbelief. ‘We only discussed this idea last night.’

‘It was just a matter of accessing the computer and downloading the appropriate file.’ He spooned sugar into his cup, then took an appreciative sip of coffee. ‘This morning we’ll check out locations, then we’ll discuss your plans with an architect and designer to obtain an overview of what you require.’

‘Today?’

‘You sound surprised.’

She offered a rueful smile. ‘I didn’t expect such fast action.’

‘Duardo has a certain reputation for getting things done.’

Without doubt. ‘When do we hit the road?’

‘As soon as you’re ready.’

‘Not the inner city,’ Kayla specified as Spence swung the Lexus onto New South Head Road. ‘Too much competition from the major stores.’

‘Agreed. There are two possible locations, one in Double Bay that Duardo has recently added to his investment portfolio.’

If she could name the ideal location, Double Bay would top the list. She almost held her breath in the silent hope the property might be one of several old cottages converted and refurbished into boutiques. Tucked close side-by-side, they lined both sides of a street frequented by the city’s social set in the heart of one of the city’s most prestigious upmarket suburbs.

‘You’re kidding me,’ she said with undisguised delight as Spence turned into the street and indicated one of the cottages.

‘It’s exactly right in every way.’ She hardly realised she was voicing her thoughts. ‘I had imagined a shop, one room. But this…’ She spread her hands, lost for words.

The cottages were built very close together on pocket-handkerchief-sized land, each cottage small with no hallway, just each room opening onto the room immediately behind it.

‘The lease has run out, the cottage forms part of a deceased estate and the family decided to sell.’

For a phenomenal figure. Had to be, given the location.

Spence found a parking space. ‘Let’s go look, shall we?’

Wooden floors, rich Oriental rugs, select apparel tastefully displayed. Spence presented the vendeuse with a card.

‘Yes, of course. I’ve been notified to expect you.’

Two rooms, which could easily be opened up into one large room, if need be.
