The Lake County sheriff’s office and jail in Crown Point, Ind., from which John Dillinger escaped on March 3, 1934.

Walking calmly out of the jail and into the adjacent garage, Dillinger stole Sheriff Holley’s new V-8 Ford, embarrassing her and the town, and traveled to Chicago. In so doing, he crossed the state line in a stolen car, breaking the federal Motor Vehicle Theft Act. The crime was under the jurisdiction of the FBI who immediately took over the Dillinger case after the car was found abandoned in Chicago. Dillinger’s fellow escapee, Youngblood, went on his way, but was killed in a police shoot-out a few weeks later.

Dillinger met up in Chicago with girlfriend Billie Frechette, and the next day they were set up in Minneapolis in a rented apartment. There, Dillinger assembled a new gang, consisting of old friends John Hamilton and Homer Van Meter, and a new character, Lester Gillis, better known to history as “Baby Face” Nelson. Needing cash for a new start, the gang decided to head to Sioux Falls, S.D.
