The sound of the girls arguing loudly woke him the next morning. Dan buried his face into the pillow. Her pillow. Her scent was all over him now, and he was hard again.

With a groan, he rolled over and sat up. Should he get up? Better wait a minute and try to calm down first.

Once he was somewhat relaxed, he climbed out of bed and left the room.

Betsy and Daisy were crowding at the sink, fighting to brush their teeth. Their mom was downstairs, calling for them to hurry and asking what snacks they wanted packed.

Dan entered the bathroom. “All right,” he said, rubbing his hands. “We’re going to do things a little differently this morning.”

The girls turned to him.

Daisy’s jaw dropped. “It wasn’t a dream? I thought it was a dream!”

“I’m here,” Dan said firmly. “And I don’t appreciate you two not listening to your mom.”

“Did we wake you?” Betsy asked.

“You two would’ve woken the dead,” he said. “Trust me. I was so tired last night I was half-dead myself.”

“No!” Daisy cried. Tears filled her eyes.

“No. No, no, no.” He grimaced, disgusted with himself for his word choice.

“Relax, dum—Daisy,” Betsy said. “It’s just an expression.”

“I was just exhausted,” Dan said. He kneeled in front of Daisy and wiped her tears away. “Okay? I’m fine. Still tired because of you and your sister.”

“I’m sorry,” Betsy said.

“Me too.” Daisy sniffled.

“That settles that. Betsy, why don’t you quick run downstairs and tell your mom what snacks you want while your sister brushes her teeth? Then you can switch.”

Betsy nodded and darted out of the bathroom before rushing back to hug him and then leaving again.

“Where’s your toothbrush?” Dan asked.

Daisy held it up.

He grabbed the toothpaste.

Daisy giggled. “Not that one. That one!” She pointed to the Crest Kids tube.

He winked at her. “Just testing ya.”

He applied a little more toothpaste than he should’ve, and Daisy brushed her teeth. She went to be done before even a minute had passed, but he shook her head, and she kept on brushing. She got toothpaste drool all over her, and he wiped it off with the back of his hand before sending her downstairs.

Betsy laughed. “Really? We have towels.”

“And we have water.” Dan grinned as he washed it off. “Do I need to police you brushing your teeth?”

“Nope. I’m a big girl.”

“You are.” He eyed her. “Beautiful too. Boys aren’t calling you yet?”

“What? No! I don’t want to date anyone.” She cast him a sideways glance. “Now that you’re here, you’re going to be one of those dads who pulls a gun on any guy I bring home, aren’t you?”

Dan just smiled, revealing his werewolf teeth.

Betsy’s eyes grew wide. “Dad! You wouldn’t!”

“You going to bring home a human?”

She wrinkled her nose. “No!”

He jerked back in surprise. Was that an undercurrent of hatred in her tone? Couldn’t be. He was imagining things. Not awake yet.

“So you’ll bring home a werewolf then,” he said, trying to smooth things over. “Which means I can show him my fangs.”

“Daddy!” she whined.
