“You asked to see me, Sir?”

“Yes, do come in, Smith.” Lawson stays looking down at some paperwork, simply lifting an arm to beckon me in. It’s like I’m back at school and have been summoned to the headmaster.

He doesn’t spent much of his time in Liwonde, barely ten percent of it if truth be told. He’s always off visiting another park with British troops, going to an ambassadorial reception in the capital, or flying off to some other part of Africa to do a feasibility assessment. Apparently there are plenty of other countries with failing park ecosystems ravaged by poachers that could do with troops to help out.

I wait by the door, it wouldn’t be the ‘done thing’ to take a seat until Lawson has offered me one. I’ve only been working with him for a couple of weeks, but he definitely seems like an old school type who puts great stock by manners. The sort of man I’m guaranteed to rub up the wrong way.

I hated all the emphasis on acting proper when I was at Sandhurst. It’s a miracle I made it through the officer training camp.

“Smith, please take a seat.” He gestures at the worn chair opposite his desk.

“This is er, a little bit sensitive.” He clears his throat. “It’s come to my attention that you may be involved in an, ahem, intimate relationship with the woman from Ndovu Camp.” He lifts his head to look at me, his watery blue eyes piercing, like he’s asked a question.

I stay deliverately silent. He hasn’t asked a question. I’m not digging myself into any holes until I know where this is going.

I can’t piss my superior officer off, but I also don’t want to roll over for him to ask whatever he wants from me. I just need to see out another two years, then Rachel will have finished university, and I’ll qualify for my army pension. Then I can start the next stage of my life. I just need to keep my head down until then.

He tuts, making it clear what he thinks of my silence. “Well if that sort of thing is happening, first of all I’d like to remind you that while what you get up to on your own time is your own business, you are representing the Queen and the British Commonwealth here, and fraternizing with the locals is not exactly the impression we want to give off.”

I have to bite my cheeks to say silent. I know this tactic too well from my training days. Hide something damn offensive within a long, dull sounding speech and wait for the recipient to kick off. I know he’s trying to goad me into an angry reaction, I’m just not sure why. Calling Emma a local was clearly meant to provoke me.

He lets a long pause grow between us and then looks down at his papers again. Knowing that I haven’t reacted in the way he expected gives me a little internal satisfaction, but I know he’s not finished yet.
