Cara

The fear sits on me like a pillow over my mouth and nose. Enough air gets by it, allowing my body to keep functioning, but it’s crippling all the same. I want to quell the hammering in my chest, but there’s no way that will happen now. Someone is trying to kill me, and I’m terrified they’ll succeed. I thank my lucky stars Nate was on that plane. Otherwise…

“Why are you turning around?” I snap out of my paranoia to notice Nate has changed directions.

“We’re going back to Manhattan,” Nate says, his voice calm. How can he be calm when those maniacs were shooting at us!

“Why?”

He glances at me through the rearview mirror. “We’re going to hide in plain sight.”

“I don’t understand.”

Wolf turns around. “What Nate’s trying to say, is that we’re going to go to the place they’d never think of looking for us, which is right in the middle of everything.”

“The feds were shacking you up, right?” Nate asks.

I furrow my brows. “Yes.”

“And we know there are certain hotels that they use. You know, cheap ones.” Nate chuckles, then adds, “Where we’re going ain’t cheap.”

Fifteen minutes later, we’re crossing the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. Nate is following step-by-step instructions from the GPS and gets us to the hotel in record time. The last time I was here, traffic was much worse.

We pull up in front of the majestic hotel where a valet is waiting. Nate and Wolf exit as the well-dressed gentleman opens my door. As I step out, my fear is replaced with awe. The building is beautiful. The entrance is wrought in golds, blacks, and whites with two massive bronze light fixtures on either side of the revolving door. I’ve always wanted to stay here, but it’s too expensive for my budget. I don’t know how Nate will be able to afford the room on a government salary.

“Welcome to The Plaza,” the doorman says with a smile as we enter the hotel.

We stroll into grandeur. The lobby is decorated with neo-classical ornament in bas-relief. I walk slowly across a gorgeous a mosaic floor leading to paneled pilasters behind the two men who are oblivious to the décor. The elaborate wrought-iron work at the upper part of the walls gives me chills. As we get closer to the check-in desk, I notice the beamed ceiling and massive crystal chandelier. Wolf breaks off and flops down on one of the crushed red velvet couches.

“Good afternoon,” the receptionist says with a smile. “Checking in?”

“Uh, yes,” Nate answers, scratching the stubble on his chin. “But, we don’t have a reservation, and we need two rooms, please.”

“Let me see what’s available.” She taps a few keys and stares at her computer screen for a minute or two, then says, “I do have two rooms available. How long do you plan on staying?”

Nate leans toward me. “When do you have to testify?”

“Wednesday morning.”

He turns back to the smiling woman. “Checking out on Wednesday.”

She nods her head as she continues to type.
