Several years ago, the PI landscape was filled with so-called generalists who would conduct any type of investigation under the sun. One day they’re following a cheating spouse and the next they're conducting a corporate investigation of an employee stealing company funds. Even though many of these agencies still exist (and are very competent), private detectives today are specializing in unique types of investigations. Several of my colleagues conduct only cheating spouse and domestic investigations, and make a very good living. Even though I have a lot of experience in this type of investigation, it’s not my specialty. My humble opinion is that a specialist conducts a certain type of investigation day-in and day-out. Her brain is constantly trained on its approach, sequence or conclusion, and that experience is invaluable.
