Chapter 22

Jessa

While my maybe friends all chatted during lunch, I couldn’t help but try to sneak a peek at where Adam sat. When I finally got a chance to look, I found him with his nose in a book, alone at his table, not paying attention to anything around him.

It must have been nice to not care about what people said or thought about you. To brush off their words like they didn’t matter. To me, it mattered. I worked hard crafting my image, to get people to trust me, to be open and honest.

Too bad it wasn’t reciprocated. I kept one secret from people and they turned on me, dragging out the pitchforks and torches. It was next to impossible to make everyone happy, but the fact that most people didn’t even dare to stand up for me when I had done nothing but stand up for them?

That hurt the most.

After lunch, my last three classes went off without issues. It wasn’t until the final bell rang that I finally let out a huge breath of relief.

One day down, the rest to go. It would be a slow climb back up to normal, but I knew I could get there. Eventually, something else could come along and this whole debacle would blow over.

I was on my way toward the front to leave when I heard a commotion from around the corner.

Curious, I headed over quickly, trying to stay quiet even though I doubt anyone heard my footsteps over the ruckus.

A crowd started to form before me, making it difficult to see. Though it wasn’t hard to see who was involved, as his head stuck up higher than almost anyone else’s.

Adam.

I hadn’t made it more than three steps when I heard it.

My name.

Whoever Adam was fighting had shouted it. I didn’t hear what he said prior, or directly after, but the sound of my name echoed through my head.

I spun around slowly, finding the people around me staring. They backed up, giving me some space, which allowed me to finally see what was happening in the middle of the crowd.

Adam had his back turned to Miles, like he also had been walking away. He stopped mid-stride.

Was it because of what Miles said? What he said about me?

“Oh, there’s the sore subject. You and Jessa, huh? When she turned down Jay so many times, we all wondered. But here’s our answer! She didn’t want the King. She wanted the Beast.” The smug smile on Miles’ face made me want to puke.

Out of all the people, why did Adam keep getting into fights with the wrong ones? The Wolves were stubborn, egotistical, and stopped at nothing to prove they were on top. They thought they ran this school, but they did so through intimidation, not actual power or respect.

Adam spun around the second Miles mentioned my name again. His fists clenched at his sides, his chin down, but staring straight ahead at him.

A chill ran through my body. Even though Adam wasn’t glaring at me directly, I still felt the anger radiating from him.
