“So you’re not a patched member of the club?”

“Not yet.” Kidd lights up a cigarette and I make a disgusted face.

“How does that work?” He appears young. Too young to be prospecting for a motorcycle club and doing their illegal bidding. He’s got a baby face and the cutest dimples.

“It’s kind of like a trial basis. But I have to earn my spot.”

“Doing what?”

He lifts a shoulder in that I don’t care way. I just hope I get in. “Whatever the club asks of me.” He takes a hard drag and flips through the channels on the television.

“Jobs and tasks like babysitting me?”

“Sometimes.”

“If they told you to kill someone. Would you?”

“I can’t talk about that.”

“Let me guess. That’s against the rules.”

“I shouldn’t be talking to you at all.”

“Well, what else would we do?”

The tips of his ears redden. “They say silence is golden, ya know?”

“Do you know if Hero went to find my father?”

“No.”

“Would you tell me if you knew?”

“No.”

“Ugh.” I stretch out on the bed like a cat as he continues to stare at the screen and stink up the room with his smelly cigarette.

Minutes pass and I can’t stand the silence. “Tell me about Hero and Lucie.”

“What about them?”

“Is she his girlfriend?”

“Why do you want to know?”

“I’m curious and I’m going to die of boredom in this room. There’s nothing to do. Their basic cable sucks.”

“Lucie wishes Hero would make her his Ol’ Lady, but that won’t happen.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Being around them. I get the impression he’s only with her out of a sense of loyalty or duty. Lucie is Big Daddy’s niece, and he looks up to Prez.”

“I see. And Sissy, where does she fit into all of this? She seemed pissed off when she saw me and wasn’t happy to loan me clothes after Lucie covered mine in everyone’s breakfast.”

“I heard something about that. She views Hero as hers.”

“I kinda got that when she lunged at him with a knife.”

Kidd laughs. “No shit?”

I hold up my right hand. “Bible.”

“Sissy has a school crush. She’s harmless. Lucie though, if you plan on sticking around, you better watch your back. That bitch is wild.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“No girlfriend?”

“Nah. Right now, my focus is making the cut.”

“That’s all you care about? The club,” I mock.

“They’re my family. Or at least they will be. I can worry about the rest later.”

“And you’re okay with that? Don’t you, I don’t know…get lonely.”

He licks his lips and rolls the bottom one inward. “You asking me if I get laid?”

“Do you?”

His entire face turns beet red. “Why are we talking about this?”

“Because I’m bored. Though we could go swimming.” I go up on my knees in the center of the bed, pouting my lips as I bat my lashes.

“No way. You heard Hero. If I let you out of this room and anything bad happens, it’s my ass he’ll kick.”

“Ten minutes.”

“Can’t do it. Sorry.”

“You’re no fun.”

“That’s me, the fun police.”

“Speaking of cops. There’s one circling the parking lot.”

“What?” Kidd jumps up and peers through the part of the curtains.
