Christine kicked off her shoes by the front door and pressed her toes into the carpet runner. Damn her feet were killing her. If she were a few inches taller she would probably—do nothing different. She liked the way she felt in high heels and it was worth the cost in money and in pain. She had been pissed about her broken Manolo, a thirty-fifth birthday present from Kayla. Chris had gotten nowhere with the arrogant store manager but somehow, with just one call, her sweet-tempered friend had gotten the company to make good on a replacement pair. After a day like today, she welcomed the good news.

She hated days when she had to go to court. Whether talking a child out of an abusive home, or fighting to keep them from being sent back too soon, it added stress to an already difficult job. Her only consolation was that she finished at five on a day when she normally stayed late.

She poured a glass of wine and dropped into her Lazyboy recliner. Her cell phone rang. Pulling the mobile from her purse, she looked at the caller ID and answered immediately. “Are you all right?”

“Why would you think otherwise?” Kayla countered.

“You never call me from your cell phone.”

“You complain I never use my minutes.”

“Everything’s all right, then?” Chris asked.

Silence lingered before Kayla finally said, “Yes.”

“Something’s wrong. Did you and Ryan have a fight?”

“Of course not. In fact he asked me if I wanted to go away for a few days.”

“Where?”

“The city.”

Chris sipped her Chardonnay. She’d give him points for nerve. After she told his brother that Kayla would never go willingly, Ryan had decided to try anyway. “Did he say why?”

“His nephew’s birthday party is tomorrow.”

Ryan was pushing Kayla too hard, too fast. What if she disappeared again while her stepfather was out there?

“What did you tell him?” The bell rang and she sprung to her feet. “Hold on. Someone’s at the door.”

“You have a date tonight?”

“Not that I know of.” She opened the door a few inches and looked out.

“You do now,” Kayla sang out. “You owe me dinner.”

Chris had never been a slow thinker, but her brain didn’t register the sight before her. She glanced at her phone and back to her friend. She opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out.

“Chris?”

She shook her head to clear the fog. “Holy shit.” Her voice raised an octave and her heart pounded in her chest. “I can’t believe you’re here.”

“Neither can I,” Kayla said.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

She hugged Chris. “I was afraid I’d chicken out halfway down the Thruway.”

“Obviously you didn’t. How did he manage that?”

Kayla’s grin widened and her cheeks glowed. “He offered me a really good bribe.”

Chris had given up hope that this day would come. Even now she had trouble believing her own eyes. She stepped back and took a good look at her friend. “And I take he paid you before he dropped you off.”

Kayla shrugged but a warm flush infused her cheeks.
