Chapter Seventeen

Monday morning came far too quickly, but I can’t say I wasn’t excited about it. While we sat in the lounge, sipping our tea and relaxing our minds, I stared at Corbin and Morgan. Each of them would tilt their heads at me and act like they were confused why I was looking at them, but they knew damn well why.

“What is going on between you three?” Mrs. Omega asked after watching us exchange looks several times.

“Nothing,” I said a little too quickly.

“Mhmm.”

‘Just tell me,’ I mouthed to Morgan as she impishly grinned at me. She merely shrugged in response.

“Tell you what?” Mrs. Omega asked, staring at me inquisitively.

Whoops.

Her sight went to Morgan, whose impish grin quickly turned to a sheepish one.

“There’s something weird about Gary,” Corbin chimed in.

“Gary? The ferry pilot?” Mrs. Omega asked, cocking her head.

“Yeah. We think he might be an undea…”

“Gary is a Psychopomp,” Mrs. Omega interrupted. “I’m aware, as is the school. Well, those of us that are privy to the secrets of the path. The rest just find him off-putting.”

“Wait, seriously?” Morgan asked, clearly baffled.

“Huh,” Corbin stared blankly at Mrs. Omega. “I thought those were just myths.”

“Nothing in your compendium is a myth, Corbin.”

“Good to know,” he mused.

“I’m sorry, a what?” I asked, not even remembering hearing or seeing that word.

“A Psychopomp, dear. It’s all in your compendium.”

Really need to read more of that. The compendium was so large and there was a lot of information in it. It was fascinating, but it was taking me a while to get through it, and some of it could be incredibly dry. How people managed to make bizarre undead creatures sound dry, I do not know.

“Charon?” Corbin said. I shook my head and shrugged. “Anubis?”

“The dog guy?”

“The Grim Reaper,” Morgan added.

“Wait, that’s real?”

“Sort of, not quite like you’ve probably envisioned.”

“Gary looks exactly like the Grim Reaper I’ve envisioned.”

The three of them chuckled and Mrs. Omega said, “He’s a nice enough fellow, though.”

“So I keep being told.”

“Why’s he a ferry pilot for a small town, then?” Corbin asked, clearly fascinated by the topic. “Shouldn’t he be on the…” he glanced at me before pausing to think of what to say. “Other path?”

Even though I was already in the necromancy classes, there were still secrets kept from me and promises that I’d learn them later. The promises were more than I got before I joined, so I just had to accept that I’d have to wait for some stuff.

Mrs. Omega nodded and said, “Yes, he can’t return there, so he was offered refuge here. They wanted to have him be a teacher but he was quite insistent on being the ferry pilot when he found out that Mr. and Mrs. Richal retired.”

“Why?” I asked, wanting more detailed answers about everything she just said, but knowing I probably wouldn’t get them.

Mrs. Omega shrugged, “Ask him. He doesn’t have to keep it a secret, he would probably tell you since you are in the necromancy classes. My best guess
