Chapter 15

Arianne

“I s this really necessary ?” I levelled Luis with a frustrated look.

“It’s Mr. Capizola’s orders I’m afraid.”

“And what about if she has to pee?” Nora smothered a snicker.

“One of us must be with you at all times.”

My brow rose and Luis shook his head. “Of course, you can visit the bathroom on your own. But make no mistake, Miss Capizola, we will be right outside.”

“This is ridiculous.” I grabbed Nora’s hand and yanked her down the hall.

“It’s not his fault, Ari,” she said, shooting him an apologetic glance.

“I know, I’m just so... so annoyed.”

“What did you really expect? He let you return after telling you that Antonio Marchetti,”—she stopped herself, waiting for a couple of girls to pass—“tried to, you know.”

“But do they have to be so obvious?” Nixon was waiting at the end of the hall while Luis trailed behind us. There was no mistaking they were here to protect me. I’d heard the whispers as we made our way out of Donatello House, and I knew it wouldn’t take long for the entire campus to learn that Arianne Capizola was in fact... me.

Over the weekend, it had seemed like a small price to pay to return here and be closer to Nicco. But in the harsh light of day, I’d realized the life of secrecy I once resented so much, was now looking like a walk in the park compared to this. People stopped in their tracks as we passed them. Gawking at me like I’d grown a second head. A faint rumble of whispers followed us, their speculations brushing up against me, making me bristle.

“Everyone’s looking,” I breathed, clutching Nora’s hand tighter.

“You need to own this, Ari. You’re Arianne freakin’ Capizola for Christ’s sake. Don’t you dare cower.”

Her words sank into me, making me stand taller. I was Arianne Capizola, and I could do this. Until Tristan and Scott swaggered over to us.

“Ladies,” Scott said around a smug grin.

“What is this?” I refused to look at him, focusing only on my cousin.

“Your father didn’t tell you?” There was a brief flash of guilt in his eyes. “We’re here to chaperone you to class.”

“Hate to break it to you,” Nora said. “But I think you’re two bodyguards too late.”

Tristan gave Luis a sharp nod and they dropped back.

“What the hell is going on?” I leaned in closer to Tristan, my teeth clenched behind my lips.

“Relax, cous. I thought you’d prefer it this way. Luis and Nixon will be around, but at least this way you won’t feel so suffocated.”

“Don’t be so sure about that,” I grumbled.

“Arianne,” he let out a heavy sigh. “Work with me here.”

“Work with you?” I seethed. “You expect me to—”

“Ari.” Nora squeezed my hand. “He’s right. Let’s get to class and figure the rest out later.”

“That’s the most sensible thing ever to come out of your mouth, Abato.” Scott grinned.

“Fuck you, Fascini.” She mouthed back.

“Okay, okay, this isn’t doing anything but drawing more attention.” Tristan ran a hand over his mouth. “The cat is out of the bag now.
