50. Chapter 50

After the guests and musicians finally left, a concerned Caroline invited the Hursts, Darcy, and her brother to the library for a long talk with them.

After what happened that night, there was no way she was going to allow Charles to make the grave mistake of associating himself with the Bennet family. Her parents didn't work so hard for his brother to throw all their effort away for a woman who would only bring a smile to the marriage and an atrocious family!

She was sure that Louisa and even Mr. Darcy would help her to convince her brother to go back to London and forget about Jane Bennet altogether.

After everyone was comfortably seated - even Mr. Hurst was awake - Caroline turned to her brother, "Charles, it's important that we talk about what happened today, and once and for all you forget about Jane Bennet."

"Caroline, I know Miss Lydia behaved very badly tonight, but she is very young and she can learn, and it was not Jane's fault. Jane is a very sweet and beautiful young lady and her behavior is impeccable. She is an 'angel'."

Caroline shook her head in exasperation, "Charles, Miss Bennet is a sweet and beautiful woman, I don't deny that, but her family is intolerable." Caroline sighed and continued, "I have never seen such bad manners; Mrs. Bennet and her younger daughters shouldn't be in polite society! You have to keep in mind that if you associate with that family, we're going to be the laughing stock of London. All the effort and hard work of our parents to ascend socially would be in vain. I can't stay quiet and let you make such a serious mistake. What do you think Mr. Darcy?"

Darcy sighed; he didn't want to get involved in a family argument, but he had to be honest with his friend, "I agree with your sister that Miss Lydia and even Miss Kitty are bad-mannered and shouldn't be out. Mrs. Bennet is vulgar and rude and Mr. Bennet does nothing to correct his family's egregious behavior. You must keep in mind that you are just establishing yourself as a landowner and if you marry a lady from a family like the Bennets it's probably going to be more difficult for you to be accepted into high society."

"In addition, I am convinced that the Bennets are fortune hunters. I overheard Mrs. Bennet talking to Lady Lucas and Mrs. Long about all the benefits her daughters are going to have when you marry Jane Bennet. It is not fair that Mrs. Bennet and Jane only see you as a means to improve their social position. You deserve a young lady who loves you." Louisa added.

"But… Louisa, I'm sure Jane isn't a fortune hunter. Surely Mrs. Bennet said that because she knows that Jane loves me." He sighed, and looked imploringly at Darcy, "Do you agree with me Darcy?"

"I'm sorry, Charles but I don't think so. Based on my observations I am convinced that Miss Bennet doesn't feel the same as you.
