CHAPTER SIXTEEN - KALI
I dream about us. Not just Aiden and me, but all three of us. And we are all young still, for some reason. Late teens, maybe. Right around the time I started to notice Aiden was getting muscles and hair on his face. Right about the time I started to notice he was noticing me in the same way.
That day I stepped out of the shower, I realize. Thatâs what Iâm dreaming about. How it couldâve gone different if I hadnât called down to Kyle. It was a mean thing to do since I was the one making a move on Aiden and not the other way around.
But I canât help wondering what wouldâve happened to us if I had just let him look. Or even invited him into my room.
Would we have kissed? I was naked, so would he have touched me? Would we have gone all the way?
Surely not. And even in my dream I canât get us that far around the bases. I didnât date anyone until I moved away for chefâs school and even then, it was another year before I lost my virginity.
I was saving myself for you, Aiden.
Thatâs what I say in my dream.
But of course, that was just the teenage romantic in me. He wasnât mine. He was never mine. Aiden always belonged to Kyle.
This thought wakes me up and I slip into that in-between world where youâre still in your dream thoughts but also hearing the real world around you.
Traffic down on the street. Someone shouting. A horn honks. A beeping truck backing up.
I roll over and realize Iâm in bed alone.
âShit,â I say, sitting up. âAiden?â I call. No answer. I swing my legs out of bed, grab my robe off a chair, and slip it on as I wander down the hallway to the living room.
âAiden?â I call again.
But my apartment isnât that big. Just one bedroom and the front room, which acts as a living room, dining room, and kitchen all mashed up into the same space.
I glance at the bathroom door, hopeful.
But itâs open.
âAiden?â I call again, realizing this is stupid. Because heâs gone.
Jesus Christ. âWhat the fuck?â
But then that inner voiceâthat rational one that only shows up when Iâm making a big deal out of something I shouldnâtâsays, Payback, Kali.
And itâs right. Because I did this to him one week ago exactly. I slipped out in the early morning and never said a word.
Itâs just⦠I thought⦠we hadâ¦
But I was wrong. We didnât come to any kind of agreement. We had sex, just like last time. Granted, this time we werenât drunk, butââFuck!â
The door swings open and Aiden walks in. âOh, good. Youâre awake,â he says, tossing my keys into the little dish by the door.
âWhere the hell did you go?â
He holds up a paper bag and a coffee holder with two coffees in it.
âOh,â I say, relief flooding through my body.
He cocks his head at me and smiles. âYou thought I bailed, didnât you?â
âNo,â I lie.
