Chapter Fifteen

I make to push open the door, but he grabs my wrist, pulls me against him, my hands on his chest. He lifts one up, running his thumb over my palm, eyes narrowed. I glance down, see where I squeezed the knife in my hand when I first saw Jeremiah at Nicolas’s.

His eyes don’t leave mine. He already saw it.

My heart thuds in my chest, my head still swimming from what we just did. It was a mistake, because I’m leaving again. A mistake, because he’s letting me.

Why?

He brings my fingers to his mouth, sucks on each one softly, eyes boring into mine. I try to focus on him, on where I’m going next. On how I learned nothing I came here to find out.

How I don’t care.

“Who did this?” he asks me, flipping my hand and running his tongue over the shallow cut on my palm. It stings with his warm tongue flicking against my skin. But I don’t want him to stop.

I shake my head. “I…” I take a shaky breath as he uses his teeth instead, tearing against the cut. I feel the wound open, and he tastes my blood, a soft groan coming from his throat as he stares at me, waiting for an answer. My eyes flutter closed as I try to concentrate. “It was…me,” I finally say. “It was me.”

The lazy way he tasted my blood with his mouth stops, and he lowers my hand between us. “Look at me.”

I do. The intensity in his eyes startles me. The anger. The…fear?

“If anyone ever hurts you again,” he smiles at me, and I see blood on the corner of his mouth. Mine. “They’ll pay for it, Lilith.” He pulls me closer, leans down so his warm breath is against my ear when he says, “Including you.”
