Axel, Decker, and Gia were still at the front of the bakery, sitting at one of the café tables. When they came near to them, Gia jumped up and hurried to Prairie, stopping just shy of her, not sure if she would welcome a hug. Prairie smiled slightly at Gia and held her arms open. Gia launched herself at her and hugged her tight. Lucas noted that Prairie never let go of his hand.

“Lucas, everything okay?” Axel asked, looking at him intently.

Clearing his throat slightly to erase some of the rage that would probably reveal itself when talking to his friends, Lucas simply stated, “No. But not here. I’m taking her to her apartment and then helping her decide where she’d rather stay for the foreseeable future. There or my house. But wherever she stays, I’ll be there as well. Pull me off of whatever projects you have in mind. I’m going dark as far as any RS work for the moment and concentrating on my girl. Things could go FUBAR and I can’t chance her being alone if it does. I’ll text you later tonight and we’ll meet up in the morning to figure out a plan. It’s bad, X. And before you ask, she had no clue until today. She’s been blindsided.”

Axel was a smart man. So he didn’t need to know details right now. He could see it in Lucas’ eyes. He merely nodded at him, then pushed back his chair. He walked close to Prairie and held up his hands to gain her attention after Gia pulled back from her hug. “Little one, I don’t know details and right now I don’t need to. Let Lucas protect you in how he thinks is best. This is what he does, who he is and you are important enough to him to set aside all else until you’re safe from any future harm. Don’t fight him, Prairie. Let him do what his instincts tell him without fighting him. Do you understand?”

Prairie would not be Prairie without being somewhat of a smartass. “I may be blonde, but I’m not an idiot, Axel. I promise to listen to Lucas and not ignore his directions. But hear me loud and clear, I’m not a damsel either. When push comes to shove, I am my own hero. I’ve had to do it before and I’ll do it again. Don’t mistake my reaction earlier for being weak.” Since Axel had been going through ASL training, she knew he had understood every word she said. His arch of an eyebrow and slight grin at the corner of his mouth made her huff and roll her eyes. She felt a tug on her hand and looked over at Lucas.

“There’s my girl, my fighter. Come on baby, let’s go. I need to take care of you, even if you are all badass with X right now.” Lucas grinned at her narrowing eyes. He simply tugged her hand, waving goodbye to everyone as he pulled her out
