Chapter Twelve
WYATT WOKE with Adrian still snoring softly in his arms. Burying his face in Adrianâs dark blond hair, Wyatt closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, squeezing Adrian tighter.
How long had it been since heâd had a lover he could curl up with like this? He couldnât even remember.
Maybe Furlough was right. Maybe he was just jumping at shadows. Ever since the day heâd packed a bag and run for his life, heâd promised himself that one day heâd be able to come home. One day his real life, the life he was meant to haveâthe legacy he was meant to take onâwould begin. But it was always one day, some distant magical time when he would know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was safe to come home. There would be some sort of sign from the heavens giving him the all clear.
Except maybe there wouldnât be any kind of sign. Maybe heâd just have to take it on faith that the danger had passed.
He shifted uneasily on the mattress and clutched Adrian a little tighter. Could he do it? Could he stick around and see where this thing with Adrian might lead?
He wasnât an idiot. Theyâd made a connection, however tenuous. If he stayed, maybeâ¦.
âUh, Wyatt, I canât breathe,â Adrian gasped out, and Wyatt jerked and released the death grip he had on the man.
âSorry. Sorry.â
Adrian rolled onto his back and looked up at him with concern. âEverything okay?â
Wyatt melted. That right there was what he needed, someone who cared enough to ask, someone there when he got home after a long day, someone in his arms when he woke up in the morning. Stifling a sigh of regret, he shook his head. âIâm fine.â
Feeling surprisingly vulnerable and exposed, he rolled off the bed and headed for the bathroom to give himself a minute to get his shit together. He was hardly going to be Adrianâs fantasy bad boy if he started weeping in front of him⦠and he liked being Adrianâs fantasy. He liked it a lot.
After taking care of business and a quick splash of water on his face, Wyatt propped himself in the bathroom doorway and watched as Adrian puttered around the crappy little coffeepot. If they kept meeting like this, Wyatt wouldnât be surprised if Adrian brought a real coffeepot from home to go with his fancy coffee and nice mugs. The thought made him smile.
âYou want to get some breakfast this morning before you go home?â Wyatt asked before he could reconsider.
Adrian froze with the bag of coffee in his hand. He gazed at Wyatt with such a mixture of disbelief and guarded hope, Wyattâs chest tightened.
âReally? I mean, you have time this weekend?â
While he hadnât exactly lied the other weekend, Wyatt still felt a stab of guilt. âYeah. Thereâs a diner up the road a bit. We could hit it on your way.â
âOkay. Sure. That would be great.â
The speed with which Adrian showered and packed up, as if he were
