Kang chose The Commentary of Gongyang as the correct version of The Spring and Autumn Annals with the intention of creating a “new text of Confucianism“, that is, Confucius’ discourses on history implied his ideas on reform.1 The principal idea of The Commentary of Gongyang, as Kang put it, is a principle of historical evolution:

The distant epoch was full of disorder, the ancient epoch is orderly governed and then comes the harmonious epoch. Era of War has nothing to do with civilization and education. In Era of Good Governance, culture and education are gradually introduced, resulting in the so-called ‘well-off society’. The Era of Great Harmony is where culture and education are perfect.

(Kang, 1990: 29)
